RECRUITING: OU still in the hunt for Maryland DT

Brandywine, Md. defensive tackle Phillip Taylor update.

When Phillip Taylor lines up on the defensive line, teams don't move him. He is quick enough to be a force inside always drawing double and triple teams.

"It is tough sometimes because it is not very often that you go up against one guy," said Taylor. "Sometimes I get to line up on the end and I get a one-on-one situation, but for the most part I line up inside, and there were times last year that I drew four guys. That is good for our team because that frees up the rest of our team."

Taylor will be a three-year starter this year on both sides of the ball at offensive tackle and defensive tackle. Last season, Taylor finished with 79 tackles, six sacks, six pass deflections, one fumble and recovered one fumble.

Taylor can bench 420 pounds and he has posted 30-inch vertical jump. Taylor throws the shot (50'3) in track winning a county championship.

He has attended the Maryland summer camp twice and Penn State once. Taylor as been to combines at Texas, Elite Combine in New Jersey, the Super Combine in Maryland and the Scout Combine in Akron, Ohio.

"I think I performed well at all those combines," said Taylor. "I got MVP at the Elite Combine in New Jersey."

Taylor, who has also attended practices at Maryland, has been offered by over 40 schools but has narrowed his choices down to 11.

"Right now I am looking at Maryland, Penn State, Virginia, Ohio State, Virginia Tech, Georgia, Florida, Miami, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Nebraska and Pittsburgh," said Taylor. "I don't really have a favorite among those teams, but I have been to Maryland more than any school. They were the first school to offer me and they are one of my top schools."

What about the Sooners?

"Oklahoma is a very good school. I love the freshman running back (AD) that they have. One thing about Oklahoma that I like is that they produce on the field and they send guys to the pros. I am thinking about visiting Oklahoma during the season some time."

Taylor has qualified.
