If you've ever thought about questioning the recruiting prowess of Oklahoma receiver coach Darrell Wyatt — think again.
Wyatt, who helped recruit Oklahoma's stellar class of incoming freshmen, is already on his way to bringing home another outstanding group with the commitment of Irving, Texas receiver Adron Tennell on Thursday, and he didn't even have to be in Norman to do it.
What is amazing about Tennell's commitment to Oklahoma on Thursday was that his main recruiting coach — Wyatt — was in New York City vacationing with family during the visit. Instead, Tennell was showed around by Brent Venables, who promptly helped Wyatt close the deal.
"He's a real special person," Tennell said on Venables. "I've been recruited by coach Wyatt and Coach Venables, and they're all great guys. That's why I'm committing. And Coach Stoops is a great man. It's going to be fun to play for him."
That in itself is what makes Wyatt one of the America's top recruiters, and exemplifies Oklahoma's recruiting strategy. The Sooners always have one primary recruiter per prospect, but always make sure the other coaches know each recruits situation, and in this case it paid off with Tennell springing a mid-week visit on the Sooners while Wyatt was on vacation.
"I think Oklahoma is a great football program, and on the visit we saw that firsthand," said Tennell, who chose the Sooners over Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. "I like the way they talk about academics. They help each athlete get to his goals academically. It's really interesting because they help you in academics and we help them win football games."
So was the commitment in the works before he got to Norman?
"I was thinking about it a little bit, but I didn't aticipate commiting. When I got up there I just liked everything about it that about halfway through my visit I knew that I was going to commit."
Tennell is rated the 13th-best player in the state of Texas in the most recent Scout.com Texas Hot 100 list.
