Brandon Spikes, LB, 6-4, 230, SHELBY (CREST HS), NORTH CAROLINA:
JH: How has your summer gone?
BS: "This summer I took a couple of unofficial visits. I went down to Florida and went to North Carolina and N.C. State. Other than that, I have been home working out getting ready for the season. We have a younger team and I have just been focusing on making our team better. I am finally the older person on the team, all the young guys are looking up to me."
JH: What did you think of your unofficial visits?
BS: "They were great meeting all the coaching staffs. It seems like everywhere that I go in this country I love it. Making my decision is going to be hard. Take Oklahoma for instance. I have to get out there and see what they are all about."
JH: You were a good athlete before the summer, but you told me earlier this year that you wanted to become a better athlete. Did you accomplish your goal?
BS: "I got a lot faster. I got down to 230 and I can move better. My conditioning is getting better and better every day. I don't know how much faster I am as far as time, but now I am running people down that I used to not be able to. I can now take a false step and recover and still make a play."
JH: What is going on in recruiting as far as teams that you are interested in?
BS: "I had a couple of favorites, but now I am opening things up. I am going to look at all my options and see what is available for me. Getting recruited is a lot of fun and I only get to through it one time, so I am going to enjoy it."
JH: What are some of the main schools that you are looking at?
BS: "I am really wide open and I am looking for a school where I can play early. If I have an opportunity to play early, then I would consider that school. I know I am mentally ready for college football, all I need is an opportunity. I am looking at Tennessee, Oklahoma, Florida, N.C. State, North Carolina, Virginia Tech, Virginia, LSU, Georgia Tech and Clemson."
JH: What are your thoughts on Oklahoma?
BS: "I like them a lot. I just want to get out to Norman and check them out and see what it is like. Location isn't really factor or me or distance, but I just want to see what Norman is like — what the campus is like and to check out their program. I love Coach (Brent) Venables. I really like him a lot and know that he is one of the best linebacker coaches in the country. I think I will take an official visit to Oklahoma."
JH: So you are saying that distance is not a factor?
BS: "No, distance is not going to be a factor."
JH: Are you still playing outside linebacker?
BS: "I am playing the weak-side backer. The defense is doing OK, but our young quarterback is struggling. In about three quarters, he has thrown seven interceptions. I just can't wait until the first game on Friday."
