What in the world is going on this season in college football? The constants upon which we've come to depend are askew. Could the gridiron continental shelf be shifting? Are the planets out of alignment in the college football universe? To wit:
• Miami (Florida) is one overtime play away from being 0-2…
• UCLA beat Oklahoma for the first time in history…
• Notre Dame is winning again, mostly…
• Oklahoma is 1-2 and unranked…
• Bowden the Elder and his FSU team can't play offense…
• The Florida Gators can play offense…
• Undefeated Oklahoma State is considering a transfer to the Big 12 North where it can be competitive…
• Nebraska is in the Big 12 North where it won't be competitive…
• Iowa State buggy-whipped their instate rival, Iowa, and keeps on rollin'…
• Paterno is winning again, so far…
• Mike Stoops is about to bring Arizona out of the desert…
• Dave Wannstadt is losing at another level…
• Frank Solich is winning at another level…
• Mike Shula's Tide is undefeated…
• Texas Tech actually held a team to 3 points…
• Mack Brown can see a championship down the road (could it be a mirage?)…
So while I'm busily digging into the quatrains of Nostradamus seeking answers to the above issues, let's proceed to…
Friday, Sept 23
Iowa State (-18) at Army The United States government should use its influence to make sure this game is not broadcast nationally because if it were televised it could result in mass desertions.

Saturday, Sept 24
Arkansas at Alabama (-16) What was that Arkansas – USC score? Seventy to seventeen? It's a darned good think Arkansas was fired up or the Trojans would have killed them.
Croyle and company by 17
Boston College at Clemson (-3 ½) Loser's pool winner get's third place in the ACC.
Clemson by 7
Colorado at Miami, Fla (-13 ½) Colorado's only redemption will be Miami's lack of competency at quarterback. The thought here is that Kyle Wright will be a terrific quarterback…someday. If Miami loses they'll be downgraded to a tropical storm.
Sugarcanes by 10
Florida (-23) at Kentucky Look for Florida to come out flat after their emotional win against the Vols.
Gators by 42
Georgia Tech at Virginia Tech (-10) Could be one of the best games on the slate this weekend. Nascent Yellow Jackets are good but not good enough to go into Vicksburg and come out 4-0.
Hokies by 4
Iowa at Ohio State (-6 ½) Another Big 10 oh-by-the-way game. Could have and should have been a game with national implications. But isn't.
Iowa by 2
Tennessee at LSU (-6 ½) Gamblers, this is the one you want to jump on. Tennessee and Fulmer are still suffering from Urban blight and LSU is a team on a mission from God.
Tigers by 14
Michigan (-2) at Wisconsin Note: see Iowa at Ohio State comment. Barry Alvarez and Lloyd Carr…gee, let me think about that one.
Wisconsin by 9
Oklahoma – bye week. Thank goodness.
Penn State (-6) at Northwestern What's this? Joe Paternal has the Nittany Lions playing real college football again? What's that you're saying…? They're undefeated?
PSU by 4
Notre Dame (-13 ½) at Washington Big Charlie has the Irish playing very well and furthermore (are you listening coach Stoops?) he has them believing in themselves. Tyrone should call in sick for this one.
Notre Dame by 17
Texas State at Texas A&M (NL) Texas State? Wait a minute while I try to look ‘em up. That's odd…they aren't in Street & Smith's…not in any of my…oh, wait a second, there they are…number 20 in the latest Division 1-AA poll after their heart-stopping 32-25 victory over Delta State. Delta State? Wait a minute…let me look ‘em up. Oh, to heck with it.
