Chase Nelson, DE, 6'4, 253, 4.75, TULSA UNION, OKLAHOMA:
Chase Nelson has been one of the most dynamic defensive players in the state of Oklahoma for some time, and so far this year he has lived up to all his press clippings.
Nelson has been a three-year starter at Union, one of the best prep football programs in the country.
"I started out my sophomore year at nose-guard before moving to defensive tackle last season," said Nelson. "This year I am playing strong-side defensive end and most colleges are recruiting me as a defensive end. I like playing defensive end more than I like playing on the interior."
Nelson finished last season with 76 tackles and seven sacks. This season, Nelson already has three sacks and he believes he is close to 20 tackles. He can bench 310 pounds, squats 425 and has a 29-inch vertical jump.
Nelson went to the team camp at Tulsa and a pulled hamstring, which kept him from attending any individual camps this past summer. He has been offered by 16 different schools at this point, with one of the latest coming from Oklahoma.
"They offered me at the beginning of September," said Nelson. "It kind of surprised me because I knew they knew about me, but they didn't seem that interested in me for a while. I had other offers, but when Oklahoma finally offered me it kind of surprised me. I am not really sure if I am going to stay in-state or leave. I am just considering all my options. Oklahoma is a good possibility. We will just have to see how it goes."
Does Nelson have a top five?
"I really don't have a top five, so I really can't say," said Nelson. "I am looking at North Carolina, UCLA, Tennessee, OU, Minnesota and Arkansas. All of those schools have offered me. When I look at colleges I know they are all going to be nice and all the football programs are going to have the same stuff. I am going to look for the players and coaches that I can mesh with. The atmosphere and the people I am going to be around are going to be the most important things to me."
Nelson has not set up any visits at this time as he still needs to take the ACT test. He has the ACT scheduled for October 22nd.
