Gerald McCoy, DT, OKLAHOMA CITY (SOUTHEAST HS), OKLAHOMA:
JH: How is your season going?
GM: "We are 6-3 and we play Lawton Macrthur to see if we are going to get into the playoffs. If we win we automatically get into the playoffs. I am having a good year with 60 hurries, 75 tackles, 20 sacks, 13 forced fumbles, eight fumble recoveries, two safeties, one touchdown and a blocked punt. I scored on a forced fumble that was in the end zone and I recovered it."
JH: I am sure you are your own worst critic, so how well do you think you are playing?
GM: "I think I am doing pretty well. I guess I have lived up to what people say. I don't know, but I think I am. I am just playing to play up to the ability that God gave me. I thank God for the ability that he gave me and I am just trying to play up to the level that he has given me. I have lost about 10 pounds so I am playing at about 270 right now."
JH: Do you ever get blocked in a normal fashion?
GM: "It is never normal. I don't think it is ever going to be normal until high school is over. I still see double and triple teams all the time. I get cut blocks, holding and tackling at my feet. I was running after a play and I was nowhere near the play and this guy comes out of nowhere a cut blocks me and goes for my knee. Why would he do that? That made no sense to me, but that is life sometimes."
JH: I haven't talked to you since you visited Notre Dame, so how did that visit go for you?
GM: "It went real well. The people were nice and the coaches were nice. The atmosphere and facilities were nice and they have a good recruiting class coming in. Coach Charlie Weis just got a 10-year contract and that is important, because you know he is going to be there. What he says goes. There is not going to be any bull coming out of that program. The atmosphere was crazy at the Notre Dame/ USC game. It was the No. 1 team in the nation at Notre Dame with Notre Dame having a shot to win. I couldn't hear the person next to me it was so crazy."
JH: When is your next visit?
GM: "I go to USC this weekend."
JH: What are going to look for on during your trip to USC?
GM: "I look at the academic situation. I know the team is good and I can look at the roster and see what they have at my position. I want to know if the coach is going to be there, because that usually means that the staff is going to be there.
Academics are important, because that is what I am going to fall back on. I want to see the game atmosphere at USC. I am going to Miami (12-16) and Tennessee (12-10), and for those visits I am going to miss the game atmosphere. I am going to Virginia Tech (11-26) against North Carolina, so I get to experience their game atmosphere.
"I think it is important to experience the game atmosphere, but it is not always possible. I am sure every school that I am considering has a very good game atmosphere."
JH: What are your thoughts on the game atmosphere at OU and the Sooners at this time?
GM: "OU has true fans no matter if they are winning or losing. They stick with their team and they are yelling the whole game. No matter what is happening in the game they are screaming and yelling until the game is over. OU hasn't dropped out of my list at all. People say that OU isn't good any more, but that is not true at all.
"Look at who OU has played. They lost to TCU and they have only lost once. They lost UCLA and they are undefeated and Texas is undefeated. The teams they have lost to have only lost one game so they have played one of the toughest schedules in the country.
"OU is always putting together good recruiting classes and this year will be no different. That is important to me because if I do sign with OU I know I will be playing with a great group of guys. Since OU already has a great group of players on campus, then once we gelled we would be something else."
JH: When is the next time that you will be at OU again?
GM: "I may visit OU during the OU/Texas A&M game."
