Recruiting: Sooners land Texas tight end

Tight end chooses Sooners over TCU and Arkansas after official visit to Norman.

Eric Mensik, TE, 6-5, 232, 4.8 ROSENBERG (TERRY HS), TEXAS:

JH: Did you just commit to OU?

EM: "Yes sir, I sure have. I have committed to Oklahoma. I had two other trips to TCU and Arkansas, but I am not going to take them at all. I am very excited about my choice of the University of Oklahoma."

JH: You said going into the visit that you really liked OU. What put OU over the top on your visit?

EM: "It was actually Coach (Kevin) Sumlin, who is a hell of a guy. He was straight up on things and he told me about things in a factual way. One of the main reasons was him, and he will be coaching me in college. Then Coach (Bob) Stoops is a great guy and his track record as a coach is impossible to beat. I just think the OU coaching staff is second to none. Everybody knows they have the best program or one of the best programs in the country."

JH: You must have really enjoyed visiting with the players and just the visit itself?

EM: "It was wonderful. The players were great. They all came over and introduced themselves. I had a blast. I went out a few of the players like Brody Eldridge and just hung out with a number of players. I ate a lot as well."

JH: What kind of role do you see yourself playing early at OU?

EM: "At first, I am going to be a deep snapper more than anything. The senior deep snapper is graduating and they have a walk-on right now. At tight end they have Joe Jon Finley and Brody, so it may take a little while to work my way in at tight end. I deep snap on punts and PATs, so I feel I can get into the lineup pretty quick there. Either way, it is just real exciting for me to be a part of the Oklahoma Sooner football team."

JH: What do you think of the tight end position at OU and how they use the tight end?

EM: "At my high school they flexed me out, and OU flexes out their tight end a lot. It is a real neat scheme they have for the tight end."

JH: How does it feel to be an Oklahoma Sooner?

EM: "It is a wonderful feeling. It is absolutely wonderful. It is the best time to be a Sooner right now. They have so much in store for them over the next three years and I am going to have a great time at OU and get a wonderful education."
