Cochell pleased with draw

Sooners set to face familiar foes in Wichita regional

While it won't be easy to get out of the regional at Wichita State, the Sooners are happy with the their second seed and selection in the NCAA Tournament.

"We really couldn't be happier," said an elated OU Head Coach Larry Cochell after hearing the news.

"We have played all three of the teams in our regional and feel we certainly can compete well against all three. We split with Arkansas, swept ORU and lost a single game against Wichita State. All are very good teams, but there is not a team that we don't match up against."

The Sooners are coming off the Bi -12 Tournament where they blitzed OSU and Texas A&M and lost two very close games against Texas.

"We are playing well right now and it all starts with pitching," said Cochell, whose Sooners will be making their eighth NCAA appearance in his 12 seasons at OU.

"Mark Roberts and David Purcey are pitching very well for us and Evan Gruesel had two outstanding relief apparences in his last two outings. Curtis White has been great in late game situations and he is a key for us in the regional. If he can pitch for us (broken bone in a small bone high in his pitching hand makes him questionable) then we can put Gruesel back in our rotation and make Rocky Cherry our long reliever. If White can't go then we may leave Gruesel in the bullpen and start Cherry in game three. We feel Cherry is ready to give us 70 to 80 pitches in his next outing."

OU is hitting the ball well right now with junior Jason Fransz tearing the cover off the ball. Charlie Frasier is hot at the right time and Reggie Willits and Eddie Cornejo are doing a great job at the top of the order.

Wichita State is the top seed in the regional and will open play with Oral Roberts, while second seeded OU will play Arkansas in the first round.

Exact day and game times are still to be announced.
