Oklahoma earned a verbal Monday from one of their top wide receiver prospects when Tristen Ross (6'1, 193, 4.52) of Shreveport (Evangel Christian HS), Louisiana committed to the Sooners.
Ross, along with Robert Meachum of Tulsa Washington are the top two wide receiver pospects on the Sooners' recruiting board.
Ross was incredibly impressive in the Sooner prospect camp on Saturday. Ross is the son of former Sooner Alvin Ross and the younger Ross has always been a solid lean to OU.
Playing for one of the top passing teams in the country, Ross caught 34 passes for 532 yards last season including five touchdowns. He has been clocked several times in the 4.3 range.
Ross is good friends with former Evangel star Brent Rawls, who is currently battling for the backup quarterback spot at OU.
OUinsider.com had a chance to speak with Ross this afternoon about his decision. Below is a transcript of that interview.
JH: I understand you committed to Oklahoma yesterday?
TR: "I like the coaches and they have a lot of new facilities being built. They indicated to me that I could possibly play my first year. That was really what I was looking for in that I was looking for a school where I could play early and get a good education."
JH: Was this based on what you learned at this camp?
TR: "No, not necessarily I went to the three-day camp last year and got to know the university real well."
JH: "Was there anything in particular as to why you decided to give OU a verbal this early?
TR: "It's just the fact they reinforced the fact that I could play and I have always been an Oklahoma fan."
JH: Did the fact your father, Alvin, played at OU factor into your decision at all?
TR: "Yeah it does. It will be good to play where my dad played and I will get a chance to learn more about his history."
JH: Did you have an idea that you would commit to the Sooners at the camp?
TR: "It was kind of in my mind. I had it in my mind that if they stuck with what they had told me previously that I would probably go ahead and commit to them."
JH: What is your teammate Chad Johnson thinking at this time?
TR: "He really likes Oklahoma, but I am not really sure what he wants to do."
