Austin Box, LB, 6-3, 220, 4.6, ENID, OKLAHOMA:
JH: Talk about your commitment to Oklahoma today.
AB: "I have been thinking about it a lot lately. I have wanted to be a Sooner for as long as I could remember and I just decided to go ahead and get it over with. I was talking to coach Venables earlier today and I was going to wait until the Red/White game to announce it, but he talked to me and kind of got it out of me today."
JH: You have wanted to play at Oklahoma all your life, so didn't you really know that at some point you would be a Sooner?
AB: "That is exactly right. I knew in the back of my head where I wanted to go so I just decided why not."
JH: OU's first commitment was from Mike Reed, a middle linebacker. I am sure you were aware that OU doesn't have a bunch of scholarships to give, so did you realize that you better jump out there a get one since they are going to be in such high demand?
AB: "I was aware of the other commitment, and I was aware they only wanted to sign two linebackers. So, yes, I felt that I should go ahead and commit because I knew that I wanted to go to OU and I also knew that they weren't going to sign many linebackers. Coach Venables has told me that he is done recruiting."
JH: OU was always a solid No. 1 with you weren't they?
AB: "Oh yeah, definitely. They were always first in my mind."
JH: You have played quarterback and several other positions in high school, but you are being recruited as a linebacker. When did you just become a linebacker?
AB: "Actually, not until this past season did I really think I would be linebacker. It was last year that people started to recruit me as a linebacker."
JH: How much of a factor in your decision was the fact that Brent Venables is the best linebacker coach in the country?
AB: "Well, that factored into it a lot. Since I grew up a Sooner fan a lot of people were telling me to look around a little bit, because other places might have something better to offer. I can't think of a school that has more to offer for me and my talents than Oklahoma and coach Venables."
JH: You always said that if you committed to OU your friends would love it, so are they celebrating?
AB: "Actually, they don't know about it yet. But I am sure they will be pretty excited about it."
JH: Now you can relax and just enjoy your senior year can't you?
AB: "Yeah, exactly!"
