Recruiting: Bumpus talks about decision

Muskogee, Okla. defensive end Jontae Bumpus talks about his commitment to Oklahoma.

Jontae Bumpus, DE, 6'4 ½, 212, 4.6, MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA:

Jontae Bumpus made a name for himself last year on a Muskogee team that reached the state's semi-finals and featured a number of great players last season. Bumpus finished with 96 tackles, four sacks and 17 tackles for losses, and those kind of numbers will get you noticed.

A year ago, OU recruited Derrick Burton, who played opposite Bumpus, but during that process OU noticed plenty of Bumpus. Due to what they saw, he was one of the first players the Sooners offered for the 2007 recruiting class. Bumpus has always liked OU and once the Sooners offered it didn't take long for him to accept.

"I just wanted to get the recruiting pressure off my back" said Bumpus. "There was already a lot of pressure where I should go and I just wanted to enjoy my senior year. I liked the style of play at OU and style of defense so I just decided to commit to OU."

Bumpus also considered Florida and Notre Dame and he received offers from OU and KU.

"I started to think about committing to OU a couple of weeks ago," said Bumps. "I knew that this year Oklahoma was only going to offer 17 scholarships and I wanted to make sure that I had one of those. I knew I really wanted one and when they offered I thought it was best that I took that offer."

Bumpus runs the 200M (23.5) and 400M (54.9) in track and he will play basketball next year.

"Track helps me with speed and leg strength," said Bumpus. "I think my speed really helps me a great deal on the field."

Muskogee is loaded with talent again this year, and Bumpus is looking forward to a great year."

"I think this could be a great year for us," said Bumpus. "We have most of our starters returning. We just need to find a couple offensive linemen, and if we do we are going to be a very good team."

Bumpus will take his ACT test in June.
