In the first two games of the Big 12 Baseball Championship, the Sooners are going to be involved in some great pitching matchups.

In game one against KU, the Jayhawks will throw their No. 1 starter Kodiac Quick against the Sooners' No. 3 starter P.J. Sandoval who is 6-4 no the year with a 5.05 ERA. KU has been pitching their starters in reverse, and thus the two squared off earlier this year with KU winning 7-5. OU won the series two games to one. Quick is 10-4 with a 3.29 ERA. In game two, the Sooners are going to face one of the best pitchers in the country in Missouri righthander Max Scherzer, who has battled injuries this year but still posted a super 6-1 record with a 2.11 ERA. OU will throw Steven Guerra who is 10-2 with a 3.58 ERA.

It is not clear who OSU is going to throw in game three Saturday night against OU, but we do know whoever it is has a victory against OU. OU will throw ace Daniel McCutchen, who is 7-7 with a 3.52 ERA. And for the second time this year, he was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week after his relief work Friday night against Nebraska and starting performance against on Sunday.

Against then No. 11 Nebraska, the senior, who normally starts on Friday, made an appearance to strike out two batters in two innings pitched to earn his first save of the year. He then started Sunday and picked up the win. On the weekend, McCutchen held Nebraska to two runs on 11 hits, in addition to striking out 13.

McCutchen entered the weekend as the Big 12's leader in strikeouts, and padded that lead with 11 K's on Sunday against Nebraska. It marked the fifth time this season that the righty recorded double-digit strikeouts in a game, and the first win when accomplishing that feat (1-3 in those games). McCutchen lasted eight innings on Sunday and allowed two runs on nine hits and two walks. On Friday, McCutchen held the Cornhuskers scoreless in two innings of work (two hits, one walk).

In 120 1/3 innings of work this season, McCutchen has 116 strikeouts. In his career, his 260 punch-outs ranks ninth all-time at OU, just three behind eighth place (Jackson Todd, 1971-73) and six behind seventh place (Matt Reubel, 1989-1991).

The Sooners will play at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at the Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City.
