Recruiting: Sooners get fourth commitment

The Sooners are looking to sign only two to three DBs in the upcoming class, and it did not take Jamell Fleming (5-11, 197, 4.5) from Arlington (Sequin HS), Texas long to decide that he wanted one of the slots.

Fleming arrived on campus for an unofficial visit yesterday, and before the clock struck midnight had given the Sooners his pledge.

He is one of the three top corner prospects that Oklahoma has offered. Doug Wiggins of Miami Beach, and Mobile's Phelon Jones, (who has committed to Miami), are two other corners that OU has offered.

Below is Fleming's interview with's James Hale following his commitment Friday afternoon.

JH: Talk about your commitment to OU last night?

JF: "I liked them already, but when I went up to their campus I found out they had had great facilities. I also had a chance to meet all their coaches and I found out they were a great bunch of guys. Then I just looked around and I got an opportunity to meet their strength and conditioning coach. Coach Smitty was telling me all the things that he would do to make me a better football player. OU has a great strength and conditioning program and he was telling me about all the things that he would have us do. One of the players told me that he comes out with a new invention every year."

JH: When you went on the unofficial visit did you go with the thought that you were going to commit to OU?

JF: "I guess a little of both. I already knew they had a good team, but I didn't know they had those facilities and that strength and conditioning program. So when I saw everything that OU had to offer, I decided to go ahead and commit to them."

JH: How did the fact that OU doesn't have very many scholarships to give play into your decision?

JF: "That played a factor in it because I knew they didn't have many scholarships, especially for defensive backs. I liked them already so when they again pointed out to me that they had a scholarship for me, I thought I should go ahead and jump on that scholarship."

JH: What are you going to be doing this summer?

JF: "We are going to be playing in some seven-on-seven league and are going to start our own conditioning program as well."

JH: Are you cutting off all other visits and contact with other coaches?

JF: "Yes I am only going to take an official visit to Oklahoma. Oklahoma will be the only school that I deal with."

JH: How are you going to be used this year?

JF: "I am going to go both ways at cornerback and wide receiver, and I will return kicks on special team. We are going to be pretty good this year. We have a solid defense."

JH: What other schools did you consider?

JH: "I also was looking at UCLA, Texas A&M and Florida."
