Hoops: Visit sold Early on Sooners

Huntington, West Virgina small forward/shooting guard Chris Early talks about his recent visit to Norman, impressions of new OU head coach Jeff Capel and his commitment to Oklahoma. Early, a 6-foot-7 185 pounder, chose the Sooners over Miami, St. Joe's, VCU and Providence.

Chris Early, SG, 6'7, HUNTINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA:

JH: What was it about your unofficial visit that convinced you to commit to OU?

CE: "I just looked around the campus and saw some stuff that I liked. Coach Capel and his staff told me some stuff that we needed to hear, and that was all that I wanted to hear. They talked to my mom on the phone a long time and they answered all her questions. They made her happy. It is not easy to satisfy my mom or make her happy, so when she told me she was happy with Oklahoma that was all I needed to hear. Once I heard that, I knew Oklahoma was where I wanted to go."

JH: Did you travel to OU by yourself?

CE: "I traveled to Oklahoma with one of my close friends, Greg Thompson. He is a close friend of mine and he loved Oklahoma. He was with me every step of the way and liked it as much as I did. We talked about it at the hotel that night and neither one of us could think of any negative about OU. When I got back from the airport things got crazy, because a bunch of my friends were waiting for me at the airport and they had signs saying, "Barely Sooner Than Later" and stuff like that. It caught me by surprise, I couldn't believe they were there. I can't believe Alex Pulley and Ronda Cisco and Kim Pulley put that reception together for me. It was great."

JH: Coach Capel and Coach Cline were recruiting you at VCU so how much did the fact that you already knew them pretty well help in your decision?

CE: "It helped out a lot. I knew everything about them and I knew they were for real. It helped that coach Cline is from West Virginia. He actually grew up two hours from where I lived. I like coach Capel because he is young and he can relate to me in a lot of different areas."

JH: What about the basketball style of play?

CE: "I like their style of play a lot. They said they are looking to push it and get out and run. I don't like slow paced basketball. In fact, I hate it."

JH: How are you playing this summer?

CE: "I am shooting the ball well. Everything is going well. I am playing with a lot of energy and getting up and down the floor. I averaged 14 points in 14 minutes. I don't know what I am averaging this summer."

JH: Describe your style of play?

CE: "It is my ability to put the ball on the floor and shoot it. I haven't been a guard all that long, but I think I am getting better at guard every time I take the floor."

JH: Who did you choose Oklahoma over?

CE: "I chose Oklahoma over Miami, VCU, St. Joe's and Providence."
