Hoops: Top forward still listing Oklahoma

Huntington, West Virginia forward Patrick Patterson talks about his interest in Oklahoma and relationship with teammate and Sooner commit Chris Early. Patterson currently is ranked as the 15th-best player in the nation by Scout.com

When it comes to power forwards, Patrick Patterson is one of the very best prospects in the country. Blessed with great size and athletic ability, Patterson can run the floor with the best of them and his hustle and determination always gives him an advantage. As a defender, he is one of the very best players on the floor and he is a beast as a rebounder.

"I am a big guy who can run and up and down the court," said Patterson, who is ranked as the 15th-best rising senior in the nation by Scout.com. "I am a good low post player and I love to rebound and play defense. I think I am a good defensive presence on the field. I think I have a good mid-range jumper and I am getting better at handling the ball."

Patterson averaged 16 points and 13 rebounds last year in high school, and while he didn't know his numbers from the AAU circuit this spring I am told they are better then his junior year in high school. Patterson plays for Boo Williams, who will travel to the famous Peach Jam Tournament tomorrow.

Patterson is a teammate of OU commitment Chris Early. And that may put OU in the picture, it won't influence his decision.

"I am happy for Chris," said Patterson. "I think he made a great choice. I have to make the best decision for me, but I like Oklahoma."

Patterson and his family have played their team choices close to the vest, but he says he is working to narrow his decision down to five schools.

"I am interested in them all right now and I am trying to narrow my choices down to five schools," said Patterson. "I am looking at Oklahoma, Florida, Miami, Kentucky, Wake Forrest, Duke, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia."

If you notice, all the schools that Patterson has an interest in are located in the Eastern part of the country with Oklahoma being the furthest school out West.

"Distance is not really a factor, but I just know more about the programs that I have mentioned," said Patterson. "I like Oklahoma because it is a great school with a great coaching staff. Coach (Jeff) Capel is a great guy. Plus, I know a couple of guys that are going to be on their team. I know (Chris) Early and Blake (Griffin). I talk to Coach Capel quite a bit."

So just what is Paterson looking for in a college?

"The relationship between me and the coach and the relationship with the coaching staff and my family is the most important thing that I am looking for," said Patterson. "I want a strong academic program and I have to feel comfortable on campus. I want to major in computer business."
