Hoops: Sooners zeroing in on top prospects

OU Head Men's Basketball Coach Jeff Capel and his staff have been working very hard since they have been allowed to hit the recruiting trail in July. See inside for an update on who the Sooner staff has been keeping an eye on so far this summer, including Burlington, Kan. point guard Tyrel Reed (pictured).

At point guard, the Sooners have fallen in love with with 6-foot-2 Tyrel Reed from Burlington, Kansas, but they are not alone. Reed has been watched very closly by Roy Williams at North Carolina and by Kansas' Bill Self, but at this point neither Carolina or KU have offered Reed because both do not have a scholarship at this time. However, both schools are telling him they might later.

The Sooners wants to sign a point guard in this class they are evaluating several. Of course, as they do they put them in a list of priorities it appers to me that Reed is at the top of their list. OU has worked their way into a prime posistion for Reed, and the fact they need a point guard and are offering him now may pay off for them. OU assistant coach Rod Barnes has a strong connection with Reed and that is helping the Sooners.

Oklahoma also has moved very much into the hunt for Bellaire, Texas guard Jai Lucas, who is the brother of former OSU guard John Lucas and the son of former NBA star and coach John Lucas, Sr. Lucas says the Sooners will get a visit in the fall along with Kentucky and LSU.

OU has also offered Plano point guard John Roberson, and they stand a good chance to get him. OU is battling Texas A&M for his services, but now that they have jumped into the picture with Reed and Lucas, I am not sure if they will go after Roberson right now. If Roberson waits until September like he told me before, then still might be OU's guy. If he wants to do something quicker then it will come down to what OU feels about Reed and Lucas.

Sometimes it isn't easy to make decision on what to do when you are a head coach, but making these decisions is why Jeff Capel is making the big bucks.

Oklahoma also wants to sign another big, but more of a power forward type.

We have talked about Huntington, W.V. forward Patrick Patterson (6-8), who is the teammate of 6-foot-7 guard and Sooner commit Chris Early. Patterson has told me that he will visit OU, but he doesn't tell everybody that. I think he sends OU pretty good vibes, but the Sooners appear to be is a longshot here.

OU has jumped all over 6-foot-8 forward Chandler Parsons (6-8) from Winter Park Lake Howell, Fla. The Sooner coaches have now watched him a bunch and they don't miss a workout or a game. Again, Coach Barnes has a strong connection with Parsons that is helping the Sooners. OU will be in his top five.

Mike Scott, another 6-foot-7 forward from Hargrave Military Academy, is another prospect Sooners are keeping an eye on.

Then you also have Leonard Washinton (6-6) from Lake Charles, La., who still indicates that he is interested in OU along with LSU and Washington.
