Recruiting: Does OU still lead for Lewis?

San Antonio, Texas athlete Travis Lewis talks about his summer progress in the weight room and interest in Oklahoma. Lewis, a three-star prospect, is being recruited as a running back, safety and linebacker.

Travis Lewis, ATH, 6-2, 215, 4.4 SAN ANTONIO (LEE HS), TEXAS:

JH: How are your summer workouts going?

TL: "They are going well. I am just working out and relaxing."

JH: What goals did you set for yourself the summer?

TL: "I want to gain weight and keep my 40 as low as it is. I want to get stronger, a heck of a lot stronger. I am trying to get my squat over 550 to 600 and my bench over 350 and close to 400."

JH: Are you meeting the goals that you set for yourself this off-season?

TL: "I am doing real well. I am 220 right now. I just ran a 40 a week ago and I ran a 4.39, which isn't too bad from the 4.34 that I ran at the combine. My last squat was a 560, so I am doing well. My coach is proud of me in the weight room. He tells me to relax more and let my body rest more. But this is my senior season and it is all or nothing right now."

JH: Are you still going both ways this year?

TL: "I am a full-time running back this year. I will also punt and spot-play on defense at outside linebacker. I also want to play on special teams, but coach doesn't want to do that. He says I need to rest some as much as I am going to carry the ball, but I would love to play on all the special teams. He will spot-play me on defense."

JH: What is the latest in recruiting?

TL: "I haven't gone on any visits or to any camps this summer. I have talked to some of the colleges that I am interested in. Right now it is Nebraska and Oklahoma and USC. USC hasn't offered, but they have talked to me a bunch this summer."

JH: What are your thoughts on Oklahoma?

TL: "Oklahoma is a great college. One of my friends, Jacob Gutierrez, has an uncle who has been talking to me about Oklahoma. OU is great."

JH: Have you been in contact with OU this summer much?

TL: "I have talked to Coach Wright a few times. This last month I haven't been talking to anybody. I haven't talked to anybody because it is getting close to my school year and I want to get ready for my senior year. I don't think I am going to commit early. I know some guys want to do that, but that has never been something that I wanted to do.

"I guess they need a safety net or they just know where they want to go, but I am not worried about that. I want to take some visits because I have never been out of Texas. I want to see what is out there. I want to see some of the other campuses and see what some other parts of the country look like."

JH: What position are the main three schools recruiting you for?

TL: "Nebraska is recruiting outside linebacker, and so is USC. I haven't really talked to OU about it. I bet it is linebacker, but they are just recruiting me. Some colleges like Arizona and Houston are recruiting me to play running back. I don't have any problem with programs playing me on defense. I will play anywhere. Those guys have been putting players in positions for many years and doing it well. They will do the same for me."

JH: At one point you were very close to committing to OU, but now you have three schools that appear to be running very close. Does that mean you don't like OU as much?

TL: "It was that time that I talked to Bob Stoops and he told me that if I was going to commit, then I needed to commit and not take any visits. I respected that so much because that made me think right then. I don't want to commit and then change my mind. I don't like guys that change their mind and I don't want to do that. I still like OU a lot."
