Norman — For the second straight week, Oklahoma found themsleves tied at halftime in a game in which they were heavily favored.
But unlike last week's struggle against Alabama-Birmingham, the 15th-ranked Sooners (2-0) took care of business in the second half en route to a 37-20 win over Washington (1-1).
With the game tied at 13-13 at halftime, the Sooner defense rose to the challenge shutting out the Huskies in the third quarter while the offense put erupted for 24 unanswered second half points.
Paul Thompson hit Malcolm Kelly for a 35-yard touchdown pass, the second TD connection of the day by the combo, on OU's first drive of the second half to give the Sooners a 20-13 lead at the 11:15 mark of the third quarter.
And on their second drive of the half, Garrett Hartley would add a 30-yard field goal, one of three on the day, with 7:01 to go in the quarter to push the lead to 23-13.
But on Oklahoma's next drive, Thompson's fumble in the end zone was recovered by Washington on the Sooners' 4-yard line. However, Husky quarterback Isaiah Stanback was stripped two plays later and Oklahoma recovered it at the 8-yard line.
The Sooners then went on an impressive 6-play, 92-yard drive that was capped by a 17-yard Adrian Peterson touchdown run to break the game open and give OU a 30-13 lead with 49 seconds to go in the fourth quarter.
Speaking of Peterson, the sophomore sensation went over the century mark for the second straight game this season and 18th-time of his career. The Palestine, Texas native finished with 165 yards on 32 carries, which moved him past Stanley Wilson into 6th-place on the all-time OU career rushing list.
Peterson is now just 790 yards away from breaking Billy Sims' career OU rushing record. And with his two touchdown runs, Peterson also moved into a tie for 9th on the all-time career rushing touchdown list at Oklahoma.
For Thompson, it was another solid performance as the Leander, Texas native notched career highs for completions (21) and passing yards (272).
Sophomore receiver Malcolm Kelly also set career highs with two touchdown catches and 121 receiving yards on six catches.
As for the defense, it was a rocky first half but they rebounded in the second half shutting out the Huskies for 29 minutes and 33 seconds until a late four quarter score.
The win was also a special one for OU head coach Bob Stoops, who celebrated his 46th birthday Saturday. The Sooners are now 2-0 in games played on Stoops' birthday.
OU will travel to Eugene, Oregon for a showdown with the Ducks next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. CST.
