The OU coaches really feel this freshman class is a very good one. Out of that freshman class the best bets to play this year are WR Travis Wilson, LB Rufus Alexander and CB Michael Hawkins.
OU will give Wilson a chance as a punt returner. They love his size and speed combination and OU likes bigger players returning kicks. Wilson reminds the OU coaches of Brandon Daniels. Alexander is working at WLB as his normal position, but he is still going to get a look at the Roy Williams dime position. Mike Stoops loves Hawkins and because of his size and maturity, he feels Hawkins might help them this year.
The OU coaches want Antonio Perkins on the field. If you notice in the defensive photo in Sports Illustrated, Perkins is one of the 11 in the picture. He is the starting deep SS and the third corner. Eric Bassey is the starter right now at Roy's dime position, but not at SS. Bassey will be pushed by Michael Thompson, Brandon Shelby, Alexander and throw in Brodney Pool. Pool's name was brought up several time by Mike Stoops and Brent Venables, and the coaches feel he might be the second coming of Williams.
Pasha Jackson will start at SLB and not the WLB position as originially thought. Venables feels this will really help Jackson excellerate his learning curve. Both Jackson and Lance Mitchell told me they spent part of the summer back in San Francisco. I hope they are ready for the Oklahoma heat.
Tommie Harris was so busy today it was unreal. Only Bob Stoops had more people standing in line to get his autograph. However, Tommie was great with everybody and every Sooner players was tremendous.
Nate Hybl really believes that he has a shot to be the starting QB in two-a-days. If Jason White plays well I don't feel he has a shot even if he outplays White a little. The only way I can see it is if White plays bad during two-a-days.
This is a very optimistic football team and a very classy one. They also give credit to OSU for winning the final game last year and never make excuses. They feel they can win every game and are confident they can win every game. This team is ready to get started.
The coaches don't seem too upset that they only have one commitment at this time. They also feel that Tristen Ross - the wide receiver from Shreveport, La who de-commmitted last week - is still going to be a Sooner and they don't seem to be worried about it. To a man, each coach says they are still in on some great recruits and they feel as the season rolls along that they will get several commitments.
Offensive Lineman Ryan Schauler of Souix Falls, South Dakota is in Norman today for an unofficial visit. He and his folks drove all the way down from South Dakota to check out the Sooners. Sounds like he has a pretty good interest, wouldn't you say? He will spend a couple of days in Norman and they want to watch practice tomorrow afternoon.
Also, OL Akim Millington of Weaton (North), Illinois called OU yesterday and told them that he is going to try to get up for an unofficial visit soon and that he does want to visit the Sooners officially. Both are highly rated offensive tackles and both are very high on the Sooners recruiting board.
Sapulpa star DE/OL Carl Pendleton was at media day all day. He talked to every OU coach that he could and talked to me several times. I don't have any doubt that he is going to sign with OU. He does want to take a couple of trips and it looks like Stanford and Notre Dame will be the two other schools he looks at, but I don't have any doubt that he is going to be a Sooner.
