Bittersweet Victory: Sooners win, but lose AD

Adrian Peterson rushed for 183 yards as Oklahoma improved to 4-2 with a 34-9 win over Iowa State. However, Peterson suffered a broken collerbone on his last carry, a 53-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, and will miss the remainder of the regular season. (AP Photo)

Norman, Okla. — It was supposed to be one of the best days of Adrian Peterson's football playing career, but it may just turn out to be one of the worst.

With his father, Nelson, watching him from the stands for the first time in his college career, Peterson ripped off 183 yards and two touchdowns on 26 carries. But on his final carry of the game, a 53-yard touchdown run with 6:35 left in the fourth quarter, he suffered a broken collerbone as he dove into the end zone that will sideline him for the remainder of the regular season.

"After talking with doctors, (they) confirmed they believe Adrian has broken his collarbone, so best case scenario they feel is maybe the bowl game," OU head coach Bob Stoops, who returned the interview room shortly after leaving his postgame press conference to break the news to the media.

"Disappointing, of course. Sad for AD for sure, just for him personally. The competitor that he is I know it's hurting him. Just diving into the endzone and when he landed, it landed wrong and so there is a fracture in his collarbone.

The injury not only raises huge questions marks as to the remainder of Oklahoma's season, but will also overshadow a tremendous first-half effort by quarterback Paul Thompson and a dominating performance by the defense.

Thompson completed 14 of his 17 pass attempts in the first half and threw two touchdown passes, both to sophomore Malcolm Kelly, as the Sooners built a 24-7 halftime lead. He finished 16-of-27 for 195 yards.

Meanwhile, Oklahoma's defense was holding the Cyclones to a season-low nine points while picking off two passes, recording three sacks and holding them to a 1-for-12 performance on third downs.

Stoops said junior safety Darien Williams was given the game ball for his performance. The Mesquite, Texas native picked off one pass, recorded two sacks and a team-high seven tackles.

As for Peterson, the Palestine, Texas native moved into the fourth spot, past former Sooner Quentin Griffin, on OU's all-time career rushing list and possibly ends his season 150 yards shy of the all-time record held by Billy Sims.

However, despite the injury Stoops says there's a chance Peterson could return for a bowl game.

"At this point it looks like the best thing, the earliest he would be ready to play, would be a bowl game," Stoops said.

With the win, Oklahoma improved their series record against Iowa State to 66-5-2 overall and 34-3-1 in Norman.

The Sooners will play Colorado at 6 p.m. (CST) next Saturday on Owen Field.
