Norman, Okla. — Playing without running backs Adrian Peterson AND Allen Patrick in the final home game of his career, Paul Thompson saved his best for last.

The senior quarterback overcame a second quarter mistake to throw for a career-high 309 yards and two touchdown passes in Oklahoma's (8-2, 5-1) 34-24 come-from-behind win over Texas Tech (6-5, 3-4) in front of a record crowd Saturday night in Norman.

It was a Thompson pass that was intercepted by Tech defensive back Antonio Huffman and returned 54 yards for a touchdown that put the Sooners in a 24-10 hole with 1:43 to go in the first half. But the senior from Leander, Texas quickly bounced back on OU's next drive hitting Malcolm Kelly with a 40-yard bomb with 1:20 left in the half that cut the Red Raiders' lead to 24-17 at halftime and set the tone for OU's second half domination.

Oklahoma's defense took over in the second holding the high-powered Tech offense to just one yard of total offense in the third quarter and 51 yards total in the second half.

The Sooners, who outscored the Red Raiders 17-0 in the final two quarters, got a spark from true freshman running back Chris Brown. Brown gave the Sooners the lead for good at 27-24 with an electrifying 40-yard touchdown run with 12:51 to go in the fourth quarter.

He then hammered home the final nail in Tech's coffin, capping a 14-play, 80-yard drive with a tough two-yard touchdown run on third down to push the lead to 34-24 with 6:59 to go. The Alexandria, La. native finished with 84 yards on 16 carries.

Thompson, who notched another career-high with 24 completions on 31 attempts, was nearly flawless in the fourth quarter completing eight of his nine pass attempts while directing two scoring drives. He was also named the 2006 Don Key Award winner before the game.

Thompson's top target was Kelly, who tied former Sooner Trent Smith with a school-record 11 catches. And his 153 receiving yards was the eighth-best total in school history.

But not to be forgotten was the play of the Oklahoma defense, who gave up just 17 points despite fighting with their backs agaisnt the wall on several ocassions due to four turnovers by the offense.

The Sooner 'D' held a Red Raider offense who came into the game 6th nationally in total offense at 450 yards per game, to just 281 ards. Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell, who came into leading the Big 12 in passing at 375 yards per game, was held to just 250 through the air.

The Sooners also set a season-high with 25 first downs and held the Red Raiders to just 2-of-12 on third down conversions.

The 85,313 fans in attendance set a mark for the largest crowd in Owen Field history. And the comeback was the Sooners' first after trailing at the end of the third quarter since Oct. 12, 2002 against Texas.

Oklahoma will now travel to Waco, Texas for a matchup with Baylor next Saturday. Kickoff is set for 11 a.m.
