Recruiting: Top Texas DE checks out Norman

Keller, Texas junior defensive end R.J. Washington talks about his recent trip to Norman, ties to Oklahoma and his thoughts on a possible early commitment. Washington is considered by some to be the top junior DE in Texas and possibly the top player overall.

R.J. Washington, DE, 6'4, 230, 4.6, KELLER (FOSSIL RIDGE), TEXAS:

R.J. Washington is one of the top junior defensive ends in the country, and heading into next season he will be one of the top defensive ends in Texas and in the country. Blessed with outstanding athletic ability, Washington plays on one of the best defensive teams in Texas prep football and has recorded 11 sacks this season.

"I think we are underrated and we are a lot better than people think," says Washington, who already holds an offer from Oklahoma. "We don't get a lot of credit because our offense puts up a lot of points. We get overlooked sometimes, but we have several players who are really good."

Washington broke into in the starting line-up as a sophomore when district play got underway, and he finished with 10 sacks and 75 tackles playing both right and left defensive end.

Washington can bench 260 pounds and he has posted a 32-inch vertical jump. He also plays hoops where he started last season and hopes to return to the team again this year.

R.J. and a few of his friends, including Chris Perry, made the trek up to Norman Saturday to take in the OU/Texas Tech game, and he left very impressed with the Sooners.

"OU's crowd is tight. OU lost their quarterback and they lost both of their running backs, but they keep yelling and supporting their team. OU is a great team because they lose key players, but they continue to win. I think that is what makes OU a great team. They don't give in to adversity and their crowd always supports them and stays behind them."

Washington says OU will be one of the schools that he will seriously consider.

"My grandparents live in Oklahoma and my sister is going to go to OU. When I was little, I wanted OU to lose because she liked them so much. Now I like Oklahoma and know some of my friends like them. I have already been offered by OU. I almost committed to them the other day, but my friends that I was riding with thought it was cold and they wanted to drive back early. I tried to find somebody else to drive home with, but couldn't find anybody or I would have stayed the night.

"I know that Terrell (Washington/So/WR) really likes OU and I am going to have a bunch of friends going to OU. It is a great school. I got to attend the OU/Texas game and I ended up talking to Riley Dodge quite a bit. I think he is interested in OU because he said that he wanted to take my official visit to OU together. He said he had a number of visits that he wanted to take, but that OU would be one of them. Maybe we will end up playing together."

What other schools besides OU is Washington interested in?

"I don't want to go very far from home. I really don't know what other schools I am looking at. LSU is sending me a lot of mail and my dad (Russell Washington) went to SMU and played with Eric Dickerson and Craig James. Other than that, OU is the only school that I am thinking about right now."
