As the Sooners head into the final week of the 2007 recruiting race ,the one glaring need yet to be met is at running back. It surprised no one when All-American Adrian Peterson left after his junior year taking one of the greatest rushing career's in Sooner history with him.
Peterson finished third on the Sooners' all-time rushing charts at 4,045 yards, which shows what the Sooners offense can do with a talented running back taking handoffs.
Senior Allen Patrick gets the first chance to take over for Peterson and he brings excellent speed, toughness and athletic ability to the position. However, what Patrick and the remaining Sooner running backs lack is that combination of size and strength.
And that is why Tatum, Texas running back Lennon Creer (6-1, 202, 4.45) is so important to this year's recruiting class. The Sooners do not have a running back like Creer on their roster. Sure, they have others that can be a true tailback, and Patrick is one of those, but Creer comes out of high school at 202 pounds and he is a tailback in the truest sense of the word.
This past season, Creer rushed for 2,835 yards and 36 touchdowns, which was even better than his great junior season when he rushed for 2,150 and 18 touchdowns. He brings a combination of power and speed that makes big backs successful.
"Creer is a big and a powerful running back and is very hard to bring down," said Scout.com. "You almost never see just one man bring him down. He has good cutback ability and solid vision. He doesn't have blazing speed, but he is plenty fast. His biggest strength as a runner is that he has great vision and, without a doubt, he can break tackles. It is going to take more than one defender to bring him down."
Oklahoma decided very early that they were going to recruit just one running back and that it was going to be Creer. His ability and style of running is something that they don't currently have on their roster, thus they have gone on an all-out effort to try to sign him.
And their efforts have kept them in the ballgame thus far as Creer's decision is down to OU, Tennessee and Alabama. Creer, along with his teammate and wide receiver Darnius Moore (6-0, 175, 4.4), could announce their decisions as early as Thursday morning.
The Sooners are also very much in the running for New Orleans OL Alex Williams, Baton Rouge, La. DE Frank Alexander, Mobile, Ala. DE Sidell Corley, Dallas, Texas S Christian Scott and Cedar Hill, Texas athlete William Cole.
