Spring Break Brings 'White Out'...
With the coaches and team members all away on spring break, it may have been the quietest week on campus since the 2006 squad reported for two-a-days last August.
The biggest news was that Dave White, head coach at powerhouse Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, had resigned Thursday afternoon to take a job as an offensive graduate assistant at Oklahoma.
Sooner fans on OUInsider, and likely coach Stoops as well, became acquainted with White when Ryan Reynolds and DeMarco Murray were being recruited by Oklahoma. White was also on the West coaching staff at the 2006 U.S. Army All-America game in San Antonio, when Murray was a senior.
On Friday, White told OUInsider that he had been offered the job last year, but did not feel that he could accept it at the time. He explained why he took it this year.
"It's a tremendous opportunity when you get a chance to either play for a coach like Bob Stoops, or coach with what I believe is the best college football staff in America," said White.
"I have a great situation here at Gorman. I work with some great student-athletes, a fine administration and have an excellent support group. But I've been thinking about this for some time, trying to decide what is best for my career.
"I have a great desire to get into the college game and become a college coach. But I realize that I have to take some kind of step in order for that to happen. When Bob Stoops offered me this opportunity, I had to take advantage of it. So that's what I'm going to do and I'm going to approach it full-steam ahead."
After finishing with a formal statement, Dave relaxed a bit and said, "This is a really tough staff to get on. There have been times when I've been in Coach Stoops' office and there are 40 or 50 coaches an hour trying to call him just to meet him.
"When he has a vacancy he's flooded with applications. He literally has his pick of anyone in the country and to think he choose to give me the opportunity is just phenomenal. I just couldn't turn it down again."
