Norman, Okla. - For the second consecutive year, the University of Oklahoma women's basketball team has been named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for NCAA Division I programs. The Sooners also received this accolade following the '97-98 academic year.
Oklahoma was the only program in the Big 12 Conference to appear among the top 25 academic teams. The Sooners placed 20th with an overall team GPA of 3.280. OU had 12 of its 15 players to produce better than a 3.0 GPA for the academic year.
"I'm very proud of this team and the commitments they have made to this University," commented Head Coach Sherri Coale. "They are all outstanding student-athletes who take great pride in representing the women's basketball program and the University of Oklahoma."
OU also had a Big 12-best eight players named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team. Former Sooner standout Stacey Dales-Schuman and senior Caton Hill also received Academic All-District VI honors by Verizon. Dales-Schuman, earned a 3.5 GPA for both semesters, went on to be voted an Academic All-American by Verizon. In addition, she was named Verizon Team Member of the Year for women's basketball and Verizon Student-Athlete of the Year for all NCAA Division I sports. The 2002 Big 12 Female Athlete of the Year, Dales-Schuman is currently a finalist for the NCAA Woman of the Year award.
Another Sooner who had a tremendous 2001-02 academic year was senior Theresa Schuknecht, a business major who established an impressive 4.0 GPA for both semesters. Senior Kate Scott and sophomore Lauren Shoush also achieved this goal during the fall semester, while former Sooner Jamie Talbert produced a 4.0 GPA in microbiology following the spring semester.
Since Coale's arrival in 1996, Oklahoma has had 19 student-athletes to earn 36 academic all-conference honors.
The award recognizes the nation's highest team grade point averages (GPA) for the 2001-02 season based upon nominations submitted by WBCA-member coaches. The WBCA also announced Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for NCAA Division II, Division III, NAIA and Junior College/Community College.
