Scouting OU Commit - OL Britt Mitchell

Britt Mitchell of Roscoe High School is one of several big time Oklahoma commitments from the state of Texas, and at 6-8 and 280 pounds, he's also the biggest.'s Director of Scouting Scott Kennedy takes a look at game film from Roscoe's playoff game vs. Goldthwaite.

At 6-8 and 280 pounds, right tackle Britt Mitchell is easy to spot on the field for the Roscoe Plowboys. College recruiters didn't have any trouble spotting him either, and he made a commitment to the Oklahoma Sooners in March.

Putting in the game tape it's easy to see why the Sooner coaches liked him so much.

Obviously Mitchell's size is a big asset. From his tackle position he has a huge frame with long arms that allows him to get his hands on his opponents early in a play. His reach allows him to offset pass rushers that try to use speed to get around him.

Several times during the game a Goldthwaite defender would think that he was around big Mitchell, only to find two big hands on him pushing him away from the play.

It's not just size though for Mitchell. He is very agile laterally. He has a quick drop step and keeps his feet moving to get his big frame into position. Side to side, Mitchell moves extremely well.

Mitchell's outstanding frame and good lateral movement make him a virtual wall in pass protection.

Like all young linemen, Mitchell has room to improve; in his case it is in his run blocking. With his big frame, it's not surprising that he will need to learn to play with better leverage. As he fills out, he will learn to get his big frame lower and play with more strength in his hips and legs.

Mitchell played right tackle for Roscoe during his junior season. He will move to left tackles as a senior, and he projects as an offensive tackle at Oklahoma. The term "upside" gets thrown around a lot, but it's players like Mitchell that help define the term.

Mitchell is a dream recruit for an offensive line coach and strength and conditioning coach. Skill players are born, but linemen are built. When coaches are building with a mobile 6-8 and 280 pound 17 year old, they end up building a special player.

Mitchell has that kind of potential.
