Owens Ready for Sooners vs. Canes

Jameel Owens was planning to have narrowed the field down to about five programs by this week, however those goals have not come to fruition as he and his head coach have just been to busy with the beginning of the season to iron things out. At this point the Muskogee, Okla., native does have a good idea of who a few of those teams may be however.

Jameel Owens and his Muskogee High School teammates won their first game of the season last weekend over Broken Arrow High School by a score of 22-16. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound wide receiver was blanketed by double coverage the entire game and failed to reach pay dirt, however he was able to snag four passes for 78 yards, helping his team to the win. We spoke to Owens recently about his thoughts on cutting down his list and found that he has a few programs in mind for visits.

"My coach and I were supposed to sit down and make the cuts this week, but everything has been so hectic that we didn't get a chance to do that yet," Owens explained. "Right now I am pretty sure that Oklahoma will make the cut as well as Oklahoma State. Florida and LSU are two others that I think will make it and I plan on narrowing the list to five or six schools to visit."

As for his weekend plans, Owens will play his second game of the season on Friday night and then venture to Norman to watch the Sooners host the Miami Hurricanes on Saturday.

"I'm going to the Miami game at Oklahoma this weekend and to tell you the truth, I'm just excited to get to see someone else play after all the practicing the past couple of months," Owens stated. "Oklahoma has a good program and one thing I like is that while they have some experienced talent, they also have a lot of younger guys who are really good, so I see them being a solid team now and in the future. I have a good relationship with the coaching staff and have been there plenty of times, so I am familiar with the game day atmosphere and overall environment."

Is there anything the Sooners can do this weekend to help themselves in this race?

"I'm not sure what they could do to improve their situation, but if something catches my eye then it does," Owens said. "Like I said, I'm just looking forward to watching some good football between two great teams this weekend and have fun. I'm planning to take all five of my official visits and then make a decision after that, so there is no rush."

Owens reports a 2.5 core GPA and a 22 ACT.
