Lofton a Force

Curtis Lofton is in the middle of an All-American type of season, and last Saturday may have been his best game of the year as he racked up 18 tackles and scored on a huge fumble recovery that permanently placed the momentum of the game on the side of the Sooners.

Oklahoma junior middle linebacker Curtis Lofton, a 6-foot-3, 240-pounder will not be winning the Butkus award. Lofton, who entered the season as virtual unknown on the as far as the national media was concerned, was not even on the award's initial watch list.

Lofton should definitely get some strong consideration for All-American and most specifically Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year honors, as he has not only been on of the most tenacious defenders in college football, but one of the most consistent.

In high school he once racked up over 180 tackles in one season and he is putting up equally impressive numbers this season for OU. So far in seven games he has amassed 82 tackles.

He started off the season with a bang and has seemed to get stronger and stronger as each week has passed. He has been the anchor of a solid linebacking unit that has been considered to be one of the team's weaker spots due to depth concerns and injury issues, but with Lofton at full go the group seems to have played quite well.

Last week's game against Missouri may have been his biggest game so far this year. Not only did he rack up 18 tackles, but he had a fumble recovery for a touchdown to not only put the Sooners back in to the lead, but seemed to zap the energy from the Tigers squad.

"That is great," said OU defensive back Nic Harris who also had a big play on an interception in the second half. "It is big anytime a defense can make big plays. Interceptions, fumbles. It is great attest to what we can do to get the offense back on the field and put some points on the board."

Lofton will look to lead the Sooner defense in to Ames, Iowa this weekend to take on a struggling Iowa State squad. A strong performance could catapult OU up to number two in the BCS standings.

National media take note. It will be "highway robbery" if Lofton is not on all of the watch lists entering the fall of 2008. That is if he is not already in the NFL.
