A source close to the team would not comment, but Houston has scheduled a press conference for noon Friday.
Sumlin will replace Art Briles, who resigned late last month for the head coaching position at Baylor.
Sumlin has been at Oklahoma five seasons and is also the passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.
He was special teams and tight ends coach for three seasons.
Sumlin, 43, who played linebacker at Purdue in the 1980s, also has coaching stints at Texas A&M, Purdue, Minnesota, Wyoming and Washington State.
