Capel Inks Long Term Deal

Many Oklahoma Sooner basketball fans have been on the edge of their seats for the past few days because the speculation was rampant that Jeff Capel could take a job coaching at South Carolina, but that same speculation was put to an end when Capel inked a long-term deal to be the head coach at OU until 2014.

Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione once again got his man when he signed current head coach Jeff Capel to a long-term contract extension on Thursday evening. The deal will pay the coach $1,050,000 per year plus incentives.

"I want to thank the University of Oklahoma, especially President Boren and Joe Castiglione, for the continued belief in me and in our basketball program," Coach Capel informed Soonersports.com. "Our program made tremendous progress this season and the new contract will allow us to build on our momentum.

"This is also a direct reflection on our players, assistant coaches and support staff. I'm thankful to everyone associated with our program and look forward to continuing my steadfast commitment to the University by helping our program get better each day."

Capel played at Duke under Mike Krzyzewski and compiled a record of 79-41 in his tenure coaching at Virginia Commonwealth before taking the job at OU. So far ain his two years at OU his teams have compiled a record of 39-27 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament or the first time this season.
