OU Game "Critical" for Cincinnati

Cincinnati head coach Brian Kelly will lead his team in to Norman, Okla., on Saturday afternoon to face off against the Sooners. He says it is a huge game for his team on multiple levels.

UC head coach Brian Kelly on the first game…

"The win against Eastern Kentucky – obviously as a opener you have so many thoughts on how are we going to perform and execute – because it is another year, but I think a lot of those concerns were lessened because we played with such great effort. We made some mistakes, but I was really pleased with the effort that our football team gave in all phases of the game, and I think any time you do that in college football you have got a good chance."

"We are going to obviously need to clean up on a lot of mistakes we made against Eastern Kentucky, especially on special teams, because it gets a whole lot tougher this week when we go to Norman, Okla."

UC head coach Brian Kelly on how teams improve from game one to game two…

"It is valid in particular with special teams, because if there is one area in camp or pre-season that you very rarely go live it is the special teams component, so when you get in to a live situation you get sloppy. There are some penalties because it is a little faster. It is hard to really create that atmosphere in a pre-season camp, so I think there is definitely an improvement in special teams element. I think the other area where you see a great deal of improvement is players and coaches all begin to get in to a routine and I think that is really important in this game. It is a team game to get in to that routine of how you practice and how you play. I think that is why you see a great deal of improvement from week one to week two."

UC head coach Brian Kelly on why the OU game is critical for his program…

"Critical for our program in terms of where we want to go. This is a huge measuring stick for our program and our football team relative to where we stand and the progression to a Big East Championship. Certainly we can't go to Norman, Okla., and lay an egg and not play to the level that we are capable of. I don't think we will. We have not shown any signs of that. That is why it is a critical game for us because it relates more to a measuring stick as to where we are with our ultimate goal and that is to win a Big East Championship."

UC head coach Brian Kelly on playing in a big environement…

"I have coached at Penn State. I have took a team in front of 106,000 at Michigan and been in some environments of that nature. I really think after the first few series it all comes back to just football players and its execution. We have been on the road and had some good wins on the road. At South Florida was a great crowd, about 60,000 - Rutgers last year - so I think there is enough experience with our group that we are not going to go in there and wilt under the 87,000. We are really excited about going and playing in this environment, because it is what college football is all about. We want to be in these kinds of games and that is why we decided we wanted to play Oklahoma "
