Drew Allen, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound quarterback from Alamo Heights in San Antonio, Texas is off to an 0-2 start in 2008, but a tough non-district schedule will hopefully mean some success down the road in district play.
"We are playing some tough team as of late," Allen explained. "We are 4A team and coach Bird likes to challenge us and really get us ready for the district by scheduling some of the toughest 5A teams."
"We traveled up to Round Rock the first week, and we did alright. It was the first start for a lot of young guys. It was a good learning experience getting out there. Last week we played Clark and we got out to a quick start and a lead during half, and then it all kind of fell apart.
"It is good to get those things over with, Allen continued. "If it is going to happen during the season it is good to go ahead and get them over with before district play, because when district hits we really want to win everything and not have those crucial mistakes."
Allen his teammates hope to get out of the rut this weekend when they face off against Laredo.
"I know we took a step forward last week and we had a really, really good practice on Monday," Allen informed. "Monday's are usually not the best practices, and I thought today's practice went really well. We are looking to make a statement this week."
Now that he has made his college commitment to play at Oklahoma, Allen admits that it is much more relaxing because he does not have to worry about recruiting.
"I had always wanted to get the decision out of the way before the season. I wanted to make it before the first week of August, but I needed more time to make the right decision. The good thing about is I really did not press my decision. I waited to make sure that I made the right decision and I am very excited about it.
"It is a big weight off of my shoulders because I get to think about my team and my class work, and I can be more of a leader for the younger guys we have on our team, and get them ready for districts."
Allen will be trying to make it in for his official visit during OU's homecoming weekend.
"I will be trying to take my official visit on October 18th for the Kansas game," Allen said. "I think that Tom (Wort) and Marcus (Trice) are going to (make it in) to."
