Oklahoma Weekly Sports Notes -- Nov. 3

THIS WEEK: The No. 12-ranked Sooners men's basketball team will play home exhibition games against Oklahoma Panhandle State (Wednesday at 7 p.m.) and Cameron (Saturday at noon). The games will not be televised.


LAST WEEK: Blake Griffin registered 23 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and four steals in OU's 27-minute Red-White scrimmage at McCasland Field House on Saturday.  The Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year was 11-for-15 from the field and converted 1-of-3 3-point attempts.  Freshman Willie Warren finished with 10 points and nine assists (committed just one turnover) while playing point guard.

PROMOTIONS: Single-game tickets to selected men's basketball home games went on sale Monday morning.  Fans may purchase tickets to the first two men's basketball exhibition games and the first three regular season games (American, Mississippi Valley State and NIT second round).  Non-conference single-game tickets start as low as $10.  All other single-game tickets will go on sale Wednesday, Nov. 19, however, tickets to those games are available now through season, mini and group packages.  Tickets may be purchased online at SoonerSports.com or by calling the OU Athletics Ticket Office at (800) 456-4668.

THIS WEEK: Oklahoma begins competitive play with its first of two exhibition games Thursday, Nov. 6. OU meets Western State College of Colorado at 7 p.m. at the Lloyd Noble Center.  The game will broadcast on KOKC 1520 AM.

LAST WEEK: Oklahoma debuted at No. 4 in the Associated Press Preseason Poll, matching its second best initial ranking in program history.

LAST WEEK:  The University of Oklahoma women's cross country team finished 10th and the men 12th Saturday at the 2008 Big 12 Cross Country Championships held on the campus of Iowa State University.  Sophomore Kelly Waters led the way for OU, finishing fifth to claim All Big-12 honors. Waters finished the 6,000-meter event with a time of 21 minutes and 14 seconds.

NOTES:  The Sooner women finished with a total of 229 points, just four points behind host Iowa State. Following Waters in scoring was fellow sophomore Jessica Engel, who finished 18th (21:49). Junior Lauren Watson placed 43rd with a time of 22:26. The men were led by sophomore Andres Gonzalez, who finished 65th, with a time of 26:43 in the men's 8,000-meter competition.

LAST WEEK: The University of Oklahoma women's rowing team competed in their final fall regatta last Saturday in Chattanooga, Tenn., at the Head of the Hooch. OU entered two rowing squads in the Freshmen/ Novice Eights race and the varsity squad competed in the Championship Fours race.

NEXT UP:  The rowing squad will break until its first winter competition in San Diego, Calif., on January 11-18.

NOTES:  In the Freshman/Novice Eights competition, the novice "A" boat finished fifth with a time of 18 minutes and 25.1 seconds, while the novice "B" boat finished ninth with a time of 19 minutes and ten seconds … The varsity squad competed in the Championship Fours race, placing 21st out of 28 entries and completing the course in a time of 20 minutes and twelve seconds.

LAST WEEK:  The OU soccer team (3-15-1, 2-7-1) was unable to pull off the upset in the season finale on Friday against No. 9 Oklahoma State in Norman.  The Cowgirls topped the Sooners, 4-2, to end OU's regular season and its chances for advancing to the Big 12 Championship.

The Sooners will return 10 letterwinners in 2009 that started at least 10 games this season, including leading-goal scorer Whitney Palmer, whose eight goals was tied for the third best single-season total in school history.  Overall, the Sooners started four freshmen this season and five newcomers to accompany a sophomore class that has started a majority of the last two seasons … Seniors Katie Corbitt and Dickenson played in their final games as Sooners.  Corbitt finished her career with 75 games played and 64 starts, marks that rank eighth and ninth all-time at OU, respectively.  Dickenson, a starter on defense for OU prior to the last seven games of the 2008 season, started 21 games and played in 50 overall throughout her career.

LAST WEEK: The University of Oklahoma volleyball team recorded its biggest win of the 2008 season on Wednesday evening, upending third-ranked Texas, 3-2. It was the Sooners' first ever win in Austin and marked OU's second win in the series, dating back to 1975. The Sooners won the opening set, 25-21 before the Longhorns responded taking the second set, 25-9 and third, 25-22. Oklahoma surged to the challenge in the fourth, winning 25-23 and took the fifth, 15-13. Oklahoma defeated visiting Baylor, 3-2, on Sunday afternoon at McCasland Field House. The Sooners fell 27-25 in the first set before bouncing back to take the second 25-13 and third 25-12. The Bears responded by winning the fourth 25-22 before OU won the duel in the fifth, 15-13.

THIS WEEK: The Sooners hit the road facing 16th-ranked Kansas State Wednesday evening in Manhattan and Missouri on Sunday in Columbia.

NOTES: At Texas, Oklahoma was led by the freshman duo of Brianne Barker and Caitlin Higgins … Higgins led the team with 18 kills and 12 digs for her 10th double-double of the season … Barker added 47 assists and 11 digs for her team-leading 11th double-double of the year … Sophomore Sarah Freudenrich had 12 kills to aid the Sooners' offensive attack … Against Baylor, Ekwerekwu led the scoring attack for the Sooners with a season-high 17 kills.

LAST WEEK:  Sooner wrestlers wrapped up the preseason last Wednesday with the annual Red/White Classic in Edmond, Okla., on the campus of UCO.  The heated battle was decided in the final bout, as the Red defeated the White team by a 22-18 final. 

THIS WEEK:  Oklahoma will aim to win its 10th straight Brockport/Oklahoma Gold Classic this Saturday, Nov. 8 in Brockport, N.Y. 

NOTES:  Cleveland State transfer David Armstrong won his bout at the Red/White Classic, as the senior upended freshman Blake Mangum at 133 pounds … Of the three 2008 NCAA qualifiers, Joey Fio was the only one to record a victory versus J.R. Roman, 7-2, at 125 pounds.  Returning qualifiers Will Rowe (149 pounds) and Chad Terry (157 pounds) were both defeated by teammates Kyle Terry and Shane Vernon, respectively … Redshirt sophomore Jeff James also recorded a win at 174 pounds in his first competition since last season versus Cal Poly where he was injured and missed the remainder of the year.
