Wednesday night the Oklahoma Sooners will kick off the 2008-09 season with an exhibition game against Panhandle State.

The Sooners enter the season with high expectations. They are ranked nationally in the Top 15 in both the AP and USA Today polls and are considered the favorite to win the Big 12.

It is a little early to predict how well that the Sooners will ultimately play this season, but to be better they must improve as a team defensively, and OU head coach Jeff Capel believes that the potential is there.

"I think we can be," Capel responded when asked if they will be stronger on ‘D'.

"Athletically we're better than we were last year."

Panhandle State, a NCAA DII school that is coming off of a 10-17 season only returns around 16 points of offense per game.

The game will probably end up one sided, but the Sooners are ready to get out and play a team with a different colored jersey.

"We are anxious to play against someone else now," Capel admitted.

Wednesday will be one of the first times that many get to see what freshman phenom Willie Warren brings to the table.

The former Scout.com five-star was the leading scorer in the McDonalds All-American Game and was the unanimous selection as the Big 12 Freshman of the Year.
