RECRUITING: Shipp visits Texas DE

Hastings, Texas defensive end Alonzo Dotson talks about his in-home visit and interest in OU

JH: Are you now playing basketball?

AD: "No, I am just letting my body heal and trying to get rid of all the aches and pains from the football season. I am going to throw the discus in track, so I will get into the weight room and get busy, because that room can help me in both football and track."

JH: How is recruiting going?

AD: "It is going alright, but it is in full swing right now. We lost last week in the playoffs last week so now I have full time to focus on recruiting. I really enjoyed the respect the coaches gave me during the playoffs because they didn't call that much, because I was still playing. Now that our season is over and it is December they are calling all the time, which is a good problem to have. A lot of people don't have the opportunity that I have."

JH: Have you set all of your visits?

AD: "I am going to Texas this weekend and then I go to Colorado the week after that. I will go to Oklahoma January 9th. Oklahoma came by the house yesterday as Coach Jackie Shipp came by to visit. I knew about Coach Shipp before the visit, because I met him when I went up for the Colorado. Coach Shipp was basically in the house for the benefit of my parents."

JH: Do you have a favorite?

AD: "No, I don't have a favorite. Oklahoma is very high on my list. I feel I can come in and make an impact at defensive end. It is not that they don't have good players there, but the fact they do have talent at my position will make me raise my level of skills. I like the schemes that OU has for the defensive end. Right now, I get tied up because of the style of defensive scheme we run. At OU they give their defensive ends a chance to make plays. Texas is really about the same. I think I know a lot about both schools and this time around I am really going to look hard at education. That goes for Colorado as well."

JH: Are you looking forward to the recruiting visits?

AD: "I am going to enjoy myself. This is a great time in my life to get an offer to play football over the next four to five years of my life. Now, it is time to socialize with the players at all the schools and see how they enjoy the college. I need to see what they have had to struggle with and how they have dealt with their struggles. I need to find out how supportive the coaches and the administration are to players who are struggling with something academically or personally."
