NEW Frosh in Great Shape

It is not often that a school gets five players to enroll early to go through spring drills, especially the caliber of players that OU got to in Drew Allen, Javon Harris, Tom Wort, Jaydan Bird, and Ronnell Lewis. In this feature you can take a peak at them in their Sooner gear.

Last year Landry Jones, Justin Johnson, and Britt Mitchell all graduated from high school early so that they could get a jump start on their careers at OU.

Why all three guys were top of the line athletes it did not pan out for at least one of them as Mitchell dropped out of OU to begin a career in the armed services, but ended up at UTEP.

This year the Sooners have five players stepping in for winter conditioning. While the jury is still out there is no doubt that they pass the eyeball test.

Jaydan Bird (No. 55) – Was lining up in drills behind Travis Lewis and looked like he has added all of the necessary weight to compete for playing time asap.

Drew Allen (No. 15) – Was getting some good work in today and getting plenty of advice from OU QB coach Josh Heupel. Also looked about five pounds heavier than I expected.

Ronnell Lewis (No. 56) – This kid is a monster. He has arms like a defensive lineman. You could see he was taking it all in from a practice perspective, but man does he look nice in the crimson and cream

Tom Wort (No. 42) – I saw Wort in the UnderArmour game and thought a redshirt year would do him justice, but he is at least 215. He was lining up in drills behind Balogun and Daniel Franklin (who also looks up to about 220-225).

Javon Harris (No. 30) – Harris looked to be the one getting the most meaningful reps as the competition for free safety is wide open. Quinton Carter got MANY of the reps at strong safety, but Harris was right in the mix on the other side.

OU head coach Bob Stoops was also impressed by what he saw from the freshemen so far.

"All of those guys that came in wonderful," Stoops said. "(They are) fabulous guys."

"In our other experiences in the past there have not been many that could come in and really handle the winter and the levels that our guys work at and the tempo that we work at. These guys really battled through it and really handled it well."

"They have all done great and it is exciting to see them do so well!"
