Good week for Saunders

Recruiting coverage at SoonersIllustrated continues as we look to bring fans the latest in Oklahoma recruiting news. Today, we take a look at safety Tommie Saunders from San Antonio Madison. He talked with SI about the news he got today in this update.

To say that San Antonio (TX) Madison safety Tommie Saunders had a great week would sort of be an understatement. But don't take our word for it.

"Today (March 25) I got offered by Oklahoma. Last Thursday I got one from LSU," Saunders said. "Recruiting is going well for me and I am looking forward to a few more offers so that I can weigh all of my options. I plan to make a decision this spring."

And his offer list continues with many other heavy-hitter programs like Ole Miss, Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, and Houston. Saunders states that he is open to more programs, but as it stands right now, two are on top.

"Oklahoma and LSU are my Top 2 right now," Saunders said.

He was excited to get both offers, but the Sooner offer came as quite a surprise. Seems like Saunders has had an eye on the Sooners for some time.

This started last spring when visitor came through San Antonio.

"I saw coach (Bob) Stoops when he came by our school last year," Saunders said. "He did not say much at all, but he was watching all of us. I knew that Oklahoma was a good program and I was following them this past season. I mean, they played for a national championship and I like the way they play of defense. They run things."

And apparently, the same goes for Saunders who appears to be quite the headhunter himself. Last season at Madison, Saunders had 94 tackles, four pass break-ups, and an interception.

This off-season, Saunders started reaching out to the Sooner coaches and placed a few calls. It just so happens, when the next call was placed, it was for good news.

"I called the coaches and they told me they watched my film. They said they liked the way I lay the wood," Saunders said. "They said that I have a high motor and that I would fit in good with their defense. And that is good because I have a lot of interest in the school."

When the call was placed today, Saunders was surprised with the news. But he was even more surprised at who was on the other end of the phone.

"It was coach (Bobby Jack) Wright and he told me that they want me up there," Saunders said. "He said there is a lot of interest in me and wanted me to come check things out. Then, coach Stoops got on the phone and I was surprised. He told me I could play safety there. He also let me know how many safeties they plan to take."

Saunders said that he plans to take a visit to Norman sometime before the summer.
