ALONZO DOTSON, DE, 6-4, 225, 4.6, ALIEF HASTINGS, TEXAS:
(Early this morning, (1-13-03), Alaonzo announced that he was committing to the University of Oklahoma. "It was the total package. OU is a perfect fit for me," Dotson said Monday. "Great academics, a wonderful atmosphere and football tradition second to none made it an easy decision. I really think I can go in and have a chance to be in the rotation as a freshman, especially with Wilkerson going to the NFL." Dotson is talented nephew of Santana Dotson, and credited his uncle with helping him select the right school. "He was very helpful. He gave me real, unbiased advice and that really helped me sort out all the things I've heard over the past year." Dotson says he's now weighing close to 230 and expects to report to OU in August at near 240, if he can maintain his speed. The following is a transcript of James Hales visit with Alonzo shortly after returning from his visit to OU on 1-12)..
JH: How did you enjoy your visit to OU?
AD: "I really enjoyed it and I saw the other half besides football. I already experienced the football side of it when I came up for a game. The running back, Renaldo Works, showed me around and he is a great guy. I met so many great people that work with the program, but on the outside a little bit. They really make the football program go and they support the program and they were so great. I had a chance to experience the social scene at OU and that was fun. Sure, players have their ups and downs that is the same way with life and for the most part players at OU have a great time.
JH: Renaldo is a great guy isn't he?
AD: "Yes, he is a great guy and a great man. I couldn't believe how nice he was to me and I saw some of his highlights and I am here to tell you that man needs to get the football more."
JH: Did your visit to OU enhance the Sooners chances of signing you?
AD: "Yes, a lot. Everybody took me in just like I was family. I drove around with Bob (Stoops) for a while with his kids and it was just like I was one of his kids in his car."
JH: I noticed that a lot of fans were waving at you and calling your name at the basketball game. What did you think of that kind of attention?
AD: "That was crazy that people would even know who I was. I am just in high school and people know about me and I even signed an autograph or two."
JH: Do you have a leader right now?
AD: "Oklahoma is number one right now. Texas, Colorado and UCLA are still in the mix. I go to UCLA next week and then maybe to Arkansas."
JH: Does the fact that OU had a starting defensive end declare for the NFL draft give OU a better chance to sign you?
AD: "That really said a lot where I stand with Oklahoma with Jimmy Wilkerson declaring to go pro. That really put me on point right there that I have potential to come in a start as a freshman. I am just looking for an opportunity and that is all I can ask for. They can't promise me a starting job, but if they will give me an opportunity then it is up to me to take care of the rest. With Wilkerson going pro, that opportunity is now there for me."
