Payne follows up with Sooners

Recruiting coverage at SoonersIllustrated is still going as we look to bring fans the latest in Oklahoma recruiting news. Klein Forest defensive back Damian Payne talks about a few Oklahoma-related things. Check it out.

It has only been a little over two weeks Klein Forest defensive back Damian Payne got the call from the Oklahoma coaches extending him an offer. The feelings at that moment went from ‘what is going on' to that of shock and excitement.

It seems as though not much has changed.

"Yeah. I admit I was kind of nonchalant at first because the coaches called me up to the school and I had no idea what they wanted," Payne said. "Of course when I found out it was coach (Bobby Jack) Wright on the phone and I had a smile from ear to ear. It was very exciting to get an offer from Oklahoma, but I need to find out more about the school."

And apparently that has already started taking place. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Payne said that he has started some of his own research (not only on Oklahoma, but others too) to see some of the highlights from each program.

"I research different schools and check out their websites. I also look at their previous recruiting class and depth charts," Payne said. "You know this recruiting process is kind of crazy for a young boy to be thinking about all of this. I try and keep my mind off of it as much as I can."

That's probably easier said than done. Since Payne's last update announcing the Oklahoma offer, TCU, North Texas, and UTEP and have offered. Now Payne has a total of 18 offers. Some of his other options are Houston, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Iowa State, Arizona, Missouri, Kansas, Wake Forest, and Stanford.

But Payne is keeping an open mind to the programs that are showing interest. And many times he tries to get back and show them too that he is interested.

"I talked with coach Wright recently. He told me about the program and how they want to use me," Payne said. "I play well at the safety position, but he likes me as a cornerback. He said that it is a possibility for me to come in and get some reps early (as a freshman) if I was to go there."

For someone like Payne, that is something that he would want from a program seeing that his plans is to graduate from Klein Forest in December.

Payne stated that Wright wants to bring the Klein Forest star down to Norman for a visit in the near future. And it seems as though the feelings are mutual with Payne.

"If I can't get up there this summer, I'll get up there early in the season because we have three Thursday night games," Payne said. "As soon as I am able, I want to get up there and check things out. I feel like getting an offer from Oklahoma as a big accomplishment. They were on my radar already. It's not like my dream school, but I could see myself playing there.

"Oklahoma is definitely in my Top 5. I'll give you that," Payne said. "I haven't even started narrowing down my schools, but Oklahoma is there for sure."

Payne had 50 tackles, eight interceptions, and averaged 20.4 yards a punt return as a junior.
