Barnett the Next Gresham?

Dallas Smith tight end Chris Barnett will be one of the most highly sought after recruits in the "Lone Star State" for the class of '11, and he is already receiving an abundance of recruiting attention from major schools across the country. Could he see himself playing a Jermaine Gresham type of role in the OU offense?

With Jermaine Gresham being the tight end at Oklahoma the past four years it's easy to hope for another tight end just like him.

2011 Dallas Smith tight end Chris Barnett has many of the same abilities as Gresham and he's not much smaller.

So when SI caught up with Barnett at the Lewisville 7v7 we had to ask what he thought of Gresham.

"Jermaine Gresham," began Barnett. "That's the best tight end in college football!"

Barnett has already visited the OU campus multiple times, which can't be a bad thing.

So when asked about his interest in the Sooners he summed it up in one quick answer.

"Yeah, I got interest," stated Barnett. "They throw the ball to the tight end."

Even though he is only going to be a junior next year the 6-foot-5, 230-pound tight end already has a Top Five he is looking at as of right now.

With all the positive signs pointing at Oklahoma at this time it's easy to accept their place in his top 5.

" #1 - Miami, # 2 - Oklahoma, # 3 - Oregon, #4 - Tennessee, and #5 - Kansas."

Barnett is well aware of the commitment of Scout.com five-star quarterback Blake Bell, and as a matter of fact the talented signal caller has already reached out to try and convince the talented junior to be that Norman is the place to be.

"Yeah, Blake called me and told me Sam Bradford has Jermaine Gresham, and all he wants is Chris Barnett," Barnett said with a smile.

"So, it made me feel good, but you got to stay humble."

Barnett is heavily involved with the recruiting process as he has already been on a number of visits to other campuses.

And he has plenty more to go.

"We've been to Kansas, Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas, and Oklahoma State," Barnett said.

"I mean we've been almost everywhere in the Big 12, but we still have some more schools to visit like Miami, USC, and Ohio State."

Barnett has done some traveling, but he plans to be back up in Norman sometime in July.

"I'm going to go down there soon, check out the campus and do a little visit, but nothing to major."

Barnett still has two high school season left in front of him, but he already has plans to be an early graduate to get an early jump on the college game.

"I'm going to graduate in December of my senior year (2011) so I can do spring practice with the team that I go to and hopefully I can start as a true freshman," Barnett informed.
