OU targets: A brief look at 2010 linebackers

Recruiting coverage at SoonersIllustrated is going strong as we look to bring fans the latest in Oklahoma recruiting news. Today, we look at some of the defenders at linebacker who are in the mix with the Sooners.

Looking at this upcoming senior class, one position that has come up in several conversation is the linebackers, or lack there of. As of August 2009, there is one who has committed to the Sooners. But no worries, the coaching staff is hot on the trail for quite a few. Here is a quick look at some of the remaining top targets.

Aaron Franklin

By the time this article is published, Marshall's Aaron Franklin may have made the call. On the network, Franklin said that Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor and Texas A&M are the four he will choose from. But most recently, it seems as though Sooners are Longhorns will be one of the two. Oklahoma is supposed to have a slight edge, but his last stop was to Austin. This long-awaited decision is being discussed between he and grandmother. It sounds like a 50/50 situation, grandma will never lead you wrong.

Victor Burnett

It's been about 24 hours since Sooners Illustrated talked with the top linebacker out of Culver City in California. Of all the linebackers listed here, Victor Burnett is the only one playing in the middle. So that means that the Sooner coaching staff is putting on a full court press to get him in. He looks to get an official visit set up and Oklahoma has done well with the 2010 class as far as making inroads in Cali. Washington is in a good place for him, and the two top schools in Arizona could see him before the school year starts. Not a bad place to be with a solid player like Burnett.

Christian Jones

Looking at the situation, it would seem like more than a long shot to land a player like Christian Jones from Lake Howell (FL) especially since early on Florida State appeared to have a lock on him. But in recent reports, Jones claims to be more open, especially to schools like Notre Dame, Oklahoma, USC, Alabama, and Tennessee. Not saying that it will not be an uphill battle to land a player like Jones, but don't competently write the Sooners off just yet.

Rashod Favors

In late April, Fort Worth (TX) Dunbar's Rashod Favors pulled in an offer he had been waiting for for some time. It seems almost automatic that he would commit, but was still open. TCU, Baylor, Texas A&M and Oklahoma are some of the schools that still come up in conversation. In earlier updates, a summer commitment was what he was looking for, but as of late, just slow ‘playing it by ear.' Look for an in-depth talk with Favors in the coming weeks.

Shaun Lewis

Some, including Sooners Illustrated's Ahmard Vital, consider Shaun Lewis from Hightower High School in Fresno (TX) the best linebacker in the Lone Star State. Lewis is the type of player you build a defense around. But he has been low key when it comes to recruiting. He is not the kind of player to get caught up in the favorites and Top so and so. Schools like Oklahoma, LSU, Texas A&M, and recently Oklahoma State are some of the ones most frequently mentioned. Florida, Notre Dame, and California have been said also. Everyone wants in which seems like equal opportunity.

Trayvon Henry

Committed or not committed is the question at hand. Early reports say that he was (which was a statement that came directly from him and his father), but apparently there are other issues at play for the top athlete from Millwood High School. Only time will tell. But that does not change the fact that he is one heckuva athlete.
