McElroy: For now, ‘everybody is high'

Recruiting coverage at Sooner Illustrated is still going as we look to bring fans the latest in Oklahoma recruiting news. Today, we spoke with athlete C.J. McElroy from Clear Creek in League City, Texas

Going into the 2009 football season, many did not expect much from the League City (TX) Clear Creek team. Now with the team sitting atop District 24-5A with a 3-0 record, the team is on a great high. One of the players who has a lot to do with the team's current success is C.J. McElroy.

"We worked hard and 3-0 was one of our goals this year. I don't think we have ever been 3-0 (at least for a long time)," McElroy said. "We had to come in focused. We had to make this happen as a team, family. We had to want it. And we did."

Recently the Clear Creek team faced off against a tough district opponent in Dickinson, a game where the Wildcats were likely not favored. In the end, the Wildcats came out on top in the game, beating Dickinson 44-41 in a nail biter.

For McElroy, seven catches for 155 yards and two touchdowns was his contribution.

"I just wanted to make plays. Coach told me that this was going to be a big game so I needed to step up," McElroy. "My teammates blocked for me. I saw holes and I just ran to the open field. I was thinking I couldn't let them get me. So I was doing some juke moves and whatever I could to score."

And so the 5-foot-10, 180-pound McElroy did. On his first touchdown that went for 20 yards, McElroy broke two tackles and made about three more miss en route to one of his two scores.

This level of game play has brought some awareness to college recruiters across the country. Right now, McElroy admits that there are not many offers on the table, but it looks as though there will be quite a few more on the way.

"Right now I have an offer from Houston, but I am hearing from a lot of people," McElroy said. "Schools like Oregon, Texas, UCLA and Nebraska have all showed a lot of interest."

Aside from those mentioned, the Big 12 programs seem to be showing the most interest up to this point, including the perennial Big 12 champions.

"I have been talking to Oklahoma a lot on email. They (Sooner coaches) told me that they plan to be in touch," McElroy said. "In the email they wrote that they have heard a lot about me and to keep up the good work. We are watching you this season."

McElroy does not have any favorites in particular, but did call out a few programs out by name. It just so happens that the two are bitter rivals and will face off this upcoming week.

"Oklahoma is high on my list and I also have Texas high too. Texas was down watching me at my last game," McElroy said. "But really everybody is high on my list right now."

He does not have a lot planned in the visitation category, but in a couple of weeks he is set to check out Notre Dame on October 31. Schools are recruiting him as a wide receiver and running back.
