HOUSTON — Alief Hastings defensive end Alonzo Dotson discusses his signing, the Texas Longhorns and his future in Norman just moments after inking a letter of intent with OU this morning.
With friends and family, including uncle Santana Dotson, an 11-year NFL veteran, looking on, the jean jacket-clad standout sported an OU visor and was all smiles during his interview with OUInsider.com on Wednesday.
OUInsider.com: Congratulations on your signing, how does it feel to be a Sooner?
Dotson: "It feels real good. It's final. It's over. I'm glad recruiting is done with. I had a big burden on my shoulders, but now I know where I'm going next year. Hopefully, I'll come in and make a big impact."
OUInsider.com: Why did you choose OU?
Dotson: "Tradition and the defensive philosophy. I love the pro-style scheme, which allows the defensive ends to make lots of plays. It's a lot like Tampa Bay. Academically, the school's real strong, so I'll be set in my business degree and on the field."
OUInsider.com: OU and Texas both recruited you very hard; describe what it was like being the target of such an intense rivalry.
Dotson: "I did a lot of comparing, because I didn't just want to go out with one. A lot of people in the state thought I'd go to Texas, but I didnít want to make that commitment, because I wanted to compare it to something else. In the back of my mind, I knew there might be something better for me than Texas. So I visited OU and fell in love. I told Coach Stoops it was Sooner magic."
OUInsider: What are your thoughts on Coach Stoops?
Dotson: "Words can't even explain it. He's a real humble man considering all his accomplishments in the last four years. There's not enough words, but he's a family guy whoís really in-depth with his players and coaches. Everybody's a family there. That's an accomplishment in itself."
OUInsider: What has the coaching staff told you about playing next year?
Dotson: "Worse-case situation, I'll redshirt. The thing that really set me off was Jimmy (Wilkerson) going to the league, so that (defensive end) spot is open. I just wanna come in and ball with the rest of them."
OUInsider.com: Who are you comparable to on the football field?
Dotson: "I'm a lot like my uncle, Santana Dotson. We've both got really good technique and that's what's carried me so far during my high school career."
OUInsider.com: Who's your favorite OU player?
Dotson: "Tommie Harris and Quentin Griffin. I'm gonna miss playing with him, but it's definitely Tommy and Jonathan Jackson too."
OUInsider.com: Have you always been an OU fan?
Dotson: "No, actually I was a Baylor Bear fan, because of my uncle. I remember watching them a lot when I was younger."
OUInsider.com: What are your personal expectations next season?
Dotson: "I'm definitely playing. I want show what I have and represent for Houston. They're not afraid to play freshman. They're going to play the best player and if I work hard, I can do it."
OUInsider.com: What's the ideal scenario for you next season?
Dotson: "I want to be realistic in my goal, but I want to start by the Red River Shootout."
OUInsider.com: Thanks for your time this morning and good luck.
Dotson: "Thanks. Norman, here I come."
