Stoops set to hire new tight ends coach

Sooners will hire former offensive Texas A&M offensive coordinator to replace former tight end coach Jonathan Hayes

OU Head Football Coach Bob Stoops will announce soon that he has hired former Texas A&M Offensive Coordinator Kevin Sumlin as his new tight end coach.

Sumlin was promoted from Assistant Head Coach and wide receiver coach to Assistant Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator in the middle of the season by then Head Coach R. C. Slocum last season. However, when Slocum was fired none of the assistants including Sumlin was kept on the staff by Coach Fran.

Sumlin then was hired by Colorado's Gary Barnett where he worked through the recruiting process. In a grand jester, Sumlin waited to submit his resignation at Colorado until after recruiting was over.

Sumlin will join the Sooners staff immediately. Sumlin has also coached wide receivers at Purdue, quarterbacks at Minnesota and wide receivers at Wyoming.

Sumlin played linebacker at Purdue from 1983 through 86 and he finished his career among the top ten in tackles.
