Ranking the Most Important on Defense: No. 9

Sooners Illustrated brings yet another day of the most important defensive players.

No. 9:

Player: Demontre Hurst

Position: Starting field corner

The rundown: Hurst performed exactly the role last year as a freshman that defensive backs coach Willie Martinez hopes some of the youngsters will do this year, play a big part in the special teams game. He ended the year with 14 total tackles, ranking fourth for OU with nine special teams tackles, and his highlight of the year was a 15-yard sack in the Red River Rivalry.

Expectations for 2010: He is a crucial guy in this secondary because he is the only starter there that is not an upperclassman. But Hurst shouldn't have any problem fitting into the rotation with all his talent and the amount of veteran leadership around him. The Sooners will be just fine with Hurst at the field corner position.
