Spring Drills Begin!

Spring training started today in the Indoor Practice Facility and the early reviews were good from a "getting-after-it" standpoint. Read about it inside.






It's hard to tell heads from tails the first practice of spring or fall.

It's controlled chaos as new players try to learn drills, learn assignments, get used to the pace and everyone is anxious to get going.

But what is evident is effort and enthusiasm and the Rebels had plenty of that today in the IPF for the first practice of spring training.

"We had a lot of passion, energy and enthusiasm today. I know we were in shorts, but I liked what I saw from that perspective," said Coach Houston Nutt. "You could tell it was fun for them to be back out here.

"I thought we got a lot done the two hours and 15 minutes we were out here. The defense moved around well - I was proud of them."

From an offensive standpoint, Houston was pleased with the ballhandling.

"We didn't have any bad snaps, bad exchanges - no balls on the ground and that's always good to see," he continued. "It's really positive when all three of your centers, your quarterbacks and your backs take care of the ball. They showed no signs of rust in that department. You usually have one or two turnovers or fumbles or bad snaps early on, but we didn't today."

Nutt is concerned about the pace of practices with the low numbers of wideouts and corners available.

"We are very thin in those areas, but we are not going to slow down. We may not have enough guys to do some of the things we want to do. We may put some guys in there as stop-gap who won't be playing, but we are going to stay at this pace and try to help those wideouts and corners stay as fresh as they can," he stated.

"It's not going to be easy on them, but it will make them better. We're just not going to slow the rest of the team down because a couple of areas are thin."

Nutt mentioned four players on offense that stood out to him.

"We were in shorts, I will grant you that, but Brandon Bolden and Jeff Scott both looked faster to me than they were in the fall. Jeff has bulked up a little as well," Nutt noted. "Melvin Harris out wide had a real good day as well. We are just looking for consistency from him on and off the field. If he will do that, he has the tools to be a factor in the SEC.

"Melvin is 6-6 or so, he's faster, he broad jumps 11 feet. He's got everything when you measure him, but he's got to be consistent. He played well today. I was also impressed with Vincent Sanders. He's a key factor in this equation. He's got to help us."

Random Notes:

* As you already know, sophomore Tight End Z. Mason is AWOL. After having a very good offseason, Z. didn't show back up after spring break and has told Nutt he wants to play college basketball somewhere. Strange deal to put in that much effort and then abruptly walk away, but that's the story. Anyway, with him gone, tight end seems to be in the hands of Ferbia Allen, Layton Jones and Alex Williams, who was moved there from wideout today and put in a number 87 jersey. Ferbia is an undersized veteran. Layton has some special teams experience but little at tight end. Alex is 230 pounds. Here's the bottom line: Ferbia - eat; Alex - eat more than that; Layton - learn quickly; Jamal (Mosley) - study and make your grades at NWCC. Nutt did state that the staff has already talked about moving an offensive lineman - he mentioned Chris Gill, Patrick Junen and Emmanuel McCray - to tight end in situations to help in the run game. TE is a definite work in progress that needs help.

Marcus Temple is out with hernia surgery rehab, Kyle Horine was recently operated on for a stress fracture in his foot and Julian Whitehead has left the team for greener pastures. That left Charles Sawyer, Wesley Pendleton, Cliff Coleman and walkon Abdul Bangura, a freshman from Greenwood, Maryland, as the only candidates. During pass scale drills, the Rebs were only able to run one side of the field and, at times, asked safeties to come over and give the corners some relief. Obviously, more bodies needed.

* Word is that TB Tim Simon, who has been out for over a year and a half with major knee issues, got a good report from his doctor over spring break. If improvement continues, Tim has a chance, some hope, to come back in fall. He still has a long way to go, but he has made progress, we have been told.

* Apparently, JUCO transfer Safety Ivan Nicholas has made an early impression. He's already splitting time in reps with Brishen Mathews opposite Damien Jackson with the number one defense. You can tell his head is spinning from instruction, but his movement is good and it's obvious the coaches are working double-time to get him up to speed in a hurry.

* We know they are young, but athletically, the linebackers look like a real solid group with D.T. Shackelford leading the way. Joel Kight had an interception return for a TD today. Mike Marry looks solid in the middle and Clarence Jackson on the outside and Ralph Williams on the inside have clearly put in an effort in the offseason to get their conditioning, bodies and speed right. Easy to see why there is optimism about the LB corps.

* TB Nick Parker was pushing 245 pounds last year. Today, he tipped the scales at 230 and the word from the S&C staff is that he's gained speed. Will be interesting to see how that "load" looks when the Rebs put on pads.

* It is time for WR Terrell Grant to put it all together. He's got the body, the speed and the hands. What's holding him back? Hopefully, this spring will be his breakout time. He's needed badly and talented enough physically to do it.

* OC David Lee said he was most impressed with Randall Mackey today - sidebar story coming - in the quarterback group, and it's hard to argue with the expert, but it's also apparent all four of the candidates have plenty of arm. Randall was the most accurate of the bunch today, for sure, but all have strong arms.

* Watching Secondary Coach Keith Burns ply his trade is fun. He's demonstrative in a positive way and demanding. He's concise in his instructions and only tries to make one point (correction) per rep so it will sink in. He's encouraging, but if you mess up, it's an automatic 10 pushups. Hit the ground, no questions asked.

* One thing looked a little different in practice and it's apparently the Lee-Gunter Brewer influence on the passing game. The Rebel receivers seem to run quite a bit more vertical routes and intermediate routes and not as much, from a first look observation, horizontal "stuff." We'll see how that pans out as the days click by.

* Another note on the DBs. Yes, fans, Burns teaches looking back for the ball more aggressively than in the past, or so it seems.

* As a footnote to what Nutt has already said about Harris and Sanders, Melvin has sneaky speed. His long strides hide his acceleration some, but he's getting by DBs in the early going. He's also not nearly as gangly as he was when he first came on campus - his body control is much better. Sanders has excellent body control and is very good at locating the ball in the air and adjusting to it. He made a couple of catches in tight coverage today simply because he adjusted to the pass and used his body as a shield.

* DE Kentrell Lockett, propped up on crutches watching practice, said he is in hopes of finding out something on his sixth year appeal late this week. He's heard that before, he said, but he's still hopeful.

* DE Delvin Jones lost down to 218 pounds after mid-year knee surgery, but he's making a comeback. He's at 236 now and hopes to be nearly 250 when fall rolls around. He was 242 before his surgery. The knee, by the way, is fine.

* Another young DE who has changed his look is Carlos Thompson, who played last year at 228 and is now over 240. He still has his fluid movement, but looks a lot stronger already. His goal is also 250-255 by fall training.

* At the end of practice, the Rebs have a competition period. Put the ball on the five and best of five. Today, the offense scored the first two times they had the ball - on a reverse and a fade route to Harris - but the defense bounced back to stop the offense the last three snaps. The reward - no pushups while the offense had to do 20.

* The Rebs will practice tomorrow in shorts again. The start time will be roughly 4:15 and the workout is open to the public.
