'Still at the top'

Visits to Ole Miss are nothing new for Memphis, Tenn., running back Sheldon Dawson. He has been on campus a handful of times over the last few months, including two junior days in January and April, respectively.

So the 5-foot-10, 170-pound Dawson was right at home when he again made the one-hour drive up I-55 to Oxford Saturday.

Ole Miss hosted its elite camp Saturday and Sunday. Dawson -- already offered by Ole Miss -- focused mostly on continuing his ongoing dialogue with the Ole Miss coaching staff.

"I like Ole Miss a lot. It's still at the top," he said. "I know right now my top school would have to be Ole Miss. I've had a lot of (offers) coming in, but my mind's still been on Ole Miss."

Dawson rushed for 1,108 yards and 14 touchdowns on 53 carries as a junior at Ridgeway High School last season. He holds offers from, among others, Ole Miss Arkansas, Cincinnati, Memphis and Tennessee.

But the Rebels hold the edge, he said, because of his familiarity with the program. He is being recruited as a running back or defensive back.

"It's either/or. I talked to Coach (Derrick) Nix, the running backs coach, and he told me he wanted me to play running back," he said. "But then the defensive backs coach (Keith Burns) wants me to play defensive back. It's either/or. I love running back, but I'd play DB, as well. It wouldn't matter."

The two-day camp consisted of many of Ole Miss' top prospects.

Recruits were put through numerous drills, including the 40-yard dash, the broad jump and the vertical jump. Dawson participated as both a running back and defensive back. He ran a personal best 4.5 40-yard dash, and jumped 31 1/2 inches in the vertical.

Possibly most impressive, however, was his performance as a cornerback Saturday afternoon inside Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, when he was matched up with some of the camp's best receivers.

"I'm trying to work on DB a lot more, ‘cause I can do offense well. I just want to learn more things at DB," he said. "I'm getting OK with it. I'm not all the way comfortable with it like I am at running back, but it's getting there."

Dawson left Ole Miss for Alabama Sunday. He has "a couple of other camps" in the next two weeks, and is set on making a decision prior to his senior season. He named speed, vision and strength as his better attributes.

"I want to make an early decision, but I'm not sure. I want to sit down and research more on most of the schools," Dawson said. "But Ole Miss, it sticks out number one, because I've come down here all the time and I already know the program here. I just got to learn more about the other schools. If I were to make an early decision, I would probably have to say Ole Miss."
