Family Affair

Ole Miss Football Coach Hugh Freeze hit the recruiting trail Monday, landing in Florence, Ala., to make his pitch to cousins Beniquez Brown and Kivon Coman.

Florence, Ala., Running Back/Linebacker/Safety Beniquez Brown, a four-star performer according to, doesn't care what position he plays in college.

He just wants on the field.

"Running back, safety, linebacker - I don't have a preference," said Brown, a 6-2, 215-pounder. "I'm a team player. Whatever helps the team."

Ole Miss Coach Hugh Freeze had a home visit with Beniquez Monday night and approached Brown on the possibility of playing running back for the Rebels.

"We had a real good visit," said Beniquez, who has been clocked in 4.39 in the 40. "Coach Freeze talked about family a lot and that appeals to me. I want to go where I will be comfortable with my surroundings, my coaches and my teammates."

Brown, who rushed for 1,200 yards his senior season and had 74 tackles from the safety position as well, maintained his top two schools right now are Tennessee, who he has already visited, and Mississippi State, who he will visit the weekend of January 13th.

"My visit to UT was nice. I hung out with the players and coaches a lot to get a feel for their team environment and it was good," he said. "MSU is up there because my cousin is committed there.

"But I am going to take trips to MSU (13th), North Carolina State (20th) and Ole Miss (27th)."

Beniquez, who recently played in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game, insists he's wide open about his recruitment.

"I am going to give every school I visit a hard look and be fair about it. Ole Miss got in on me late, but I will not hold that against them," he noted. "I'm going to take all my visits, take my time evaluating everything and make my choice on signing day."

Kivon Coman, the MSU commitment and Brown's cousin, was also visited by Freeze Monday night.

The 6-1, 189-pounder with 4.4 speed had an interception in the Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game last Saturday. He also had 97 tackles, 5 interceptions and "a lot of forced fumbles" for Florence last season.

"I'm real good at stripping the ball," said Kivon. "It's kind of my specialty."

Coman said Freeze's visit went well.

"It was good. Coach Freeze is a straight forward kind of guy, which I like," said Kivon. "I am committed to MSU and it would take a lot to change my mind, but I am going to take a close look at all my visit schools."

Coman will travel with Brown on his visits - State the 13th, NC State the 20th and Ole Miss on the last official visit weekend, the 27th.

"There's a good chance we will go to the same school," said Kivon, "but it's important to both of us to be comfortable and if Beniquez is not comfortable with my choice or the other way around, we will go separately."

There's a friendly competition between the cousins as well.

"When we race in the 40, Beniquez usually gets me by a nose, but we are right there together," he laughed. "We're real close."
