Kanler Coker has long been committed to East Carolina. But that commitment hasn't kept other schools from contacting the Flowery Branch, Ga., quarterback.

Coker has heard from a number of schools, including Ole Miss, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech and UCLA. Still, the offers aren't there yet. And he still favors East Carolina over other schools. He wouldn't have committed if he didn't.

"I really like East Carolina," he said. "They were coming to my school just to see me about every week, it seemed like. They were calling me a whole lot and just keeping in touch; no other school was doing that. Plus, I really like the quarterbacks coach there. He's awesome. I just like the coaches, and going up there, I liked the atmosphere and everything about it. When they offered me, I felt like I needed to commit."

Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze, who replaced Houston Nutt in earlier this month, recently contacted Coker to express interest.

Ole Miss has three quarterbacks currently on the roster, but two of those quarterbacks are seniors set to graduate following the 2012 season. Barry Brunetti, a sophomore, will be the only returning quarterback.

Ole Miss has one quarterback committed in Franklin, Tenn., product C.J. Beathard. The Rebels are also after Mississippi products Anthony Alford and Jeremy Liggins, as well as East Mississippi Community College quarterback Bo Wallace.

"Coach Freeze called me a few days ago," Coker said. "I talked to him for just about five minutes or so. He said he was real interested. He said there was a kid who's a JUCO or something that they really like. They like me. Right now, that kid's probably ahead of me, but he doesn't know. They want me to come on an official visit."

Coker is undecided on whether or not he will take an official visit to Ole Miss. If he does, he'll likely make the drive west to Oxford for the weekend of Jan. 20 or Jan. 27.

"I still haven't decided," he said. "That's something that I'd have to check in with East Carolina about, ‘cause I know one of my friends who committed to Oklahoma State, he was going to go on an official to Ole Miss with me. He talked to his coaches, and they said they didn't want him to. I'll ask. I'll make the decision for me, but I'd see what they say."

The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Coker is rated a two-star prospect by and the No. 147 quarterback.

"I'm interested in Ole Miss," he said. "But I really like ECU a lot."

Coker said whichever school he ultimately chooses, that school will be getting a leader and play-maker that's "just going to do what it takes" to win games.

"I'll bust my butt," Coker said. "I'm a play-maker. When stuff breaks down, I make things happen. Just really a leader on an off the field. That's kind of what (Coach Freeze) said they need at the quarterback spot."
