Old Man Rivers

When Gerald Rivers looks around the locker room, he sees a wealth of young faces. He's an old guy by comparison, even as a 21-year-old senior.

Rivers played in all 12 games last season, tying for third on the team with 4.5 tackles for loss. Ole Miss was 2-10 overall and winless in Southeastern Conference play. What followed was a coaching change. Houston Nutt is gone. Hugh Freeze is in.

Ole Miss has 47 underclassmen, including 20 freshmen. Rivers has to be a leader. Rivers has to be a leader. Ole Miss has few accomplished players on its roster. He's played in 27 games over his career, with 10 starts.

It's his time now.

"A lot of them guys are just coming in here," Rivers said. "Being a leader on the team now, it's good. I remember coming in my freshman year. It's a big difference. A lot of guys have come in, wanting to play. Lot of enthusiasm. It pushes all of us older guys."

Rivers met with the media following practice Thursday morning. He talked of his new role as team leader, as well as of his impressions of some of the younger players who have impressed this spring.
